Hey guys, so I have this Guinea Pig named George, only a couple months old, very young.

I recently had troubles balancing their diet while moving houses, as I still had them at the old house for a week before bringing them to the new one. Anyways to put it short, I dont think I fed them enough veggies nor vitamin c. Plenty of hay and water though.

There were no obvious problems at first, he was still his normal dominant self over the other guineas.

Anyways, after a few days being moved to the new house, he began to have redness under his eye and wouldnt drink any water, nor make any noise (even when scared, in pain or excited)

One thing George always did, was scream when he heard a packet crunch, for food, he doesnt do this anymore. When he tries it sounds much like wheezing and makes very little actual sound.

After a week I got him back up and running, drinking water, PLENTY of vegetables and vitamin c, honestly he looks great. His fur is the best its been, he runs around and popcorns ALL the time when he gets out his enclosure and plays with his friend nonstop. A literal bundle of energy and joy, but the one thing that stuck with him is his voice. He still cant squeek with excitement, no matter how hard he tries? The redness is gone in his eye, everything looks perfectly fine except his voice, is this normal and come in phases for young guineas or should I take him to the vet?

Thanks for listening to this vent, just completely lost for ideas. Little dudes perfectly fine other than his voice, and not sure if its just normal for his age.

I am literally watching him play and chase Syndicate (the other guinea) right now, making plenty of noise, he just cant make the really high pitched squeek anymore.

The one thing that confused me and makes me wonder if its just age and a phase, is Syndicate has no problems squeeking and making noise. Frankly he never has any problems, other than water which is also resolved now.

Super confused

If you are worried then we would suggest a vet check given we can’t have a hands on check to know if there may be any issue - with that said Not wheeking in itself isn’t necessarily a medical issue though.
Wheeking and age isn’t really anything linked - Some piggies are more vocal and louder than others but sometimes older piggies can lose their wheek.

Moving to a new environment is disruptive for them so it may also be a slight stress response while he is settling in. They also go through the two week period of reestablishing their hierarchy which occurs whenever their change environment.

The routine weekly weight checks are always the best gauge of whether there is an issue starting.

Regarding the diet, it should be unlimited hay and one cup of veg (plus one tablespoon of plain pellets should you choose to feed them). Additional and routine vitamin c supplements should not be given. Piggies get all their vit c needs from their veg portion and fortified pellets. Giving additional vit c supplements above their dietary needs means their body can get used to abnormally high and excessive amounts, so if that that level drops from which their body had been accustomed to, then the body responds with scurvy.
