I have a guinea pig, Neo, who is diagnosed with interstitial cystitis. For a while now I'd see blood in her urine every couple of weeks or so, usually mixed with calcium sludge. Lately, the episodes have become more frequent (nearly everyday) and the blood is brighter and accompanied by very little calcium. It's a bit alarming to me that the bleeding has gotten worse. I have taken her to the vet several times now, and after xrays, ultrasounds, antibiotics, and urine culture, they're pretty positive that it's still IC.

This is my first time dealing with an IC piggie, so I wanted to know what is typical? Is it normal for her to bleed everyday like this? Is it normal to have blood that looks this bright? I've attached a few photos of what I've been seeing. She otherwise seems completely fine; she is active and eating, no major weight loss, poops look normal.

Some extra info: She is on long-term medication: Sherwood Urinary Support tablets, low-dose painkiller and a glucosamine supplement to treat the cystitis. Her diet is mostly timothy hay with filtered water, a sprinkle of pellets, and veggies (romaine lettuce, cucumber, cilantro and pepper). She has two cagemates and lives in a big cage.

Hi, I’ve had two piggies now who had IC and daily flares can sadly be normal. It should right itself again but for now, carry on giving her her medication why she is having the flare. The bright red blood can also be normal for IC piggies and if infection, reproductive problems and bladder stones have been ruled out then the likelihood of it being IC is very high

Thank you for the reply; I'm relieved to hear that it's not abnormal, though I hate to see her like this. Hopefully it will resolve soon. Thank you again!
