Hi everyone, This morning I noticed a spot on my piggy that looked a little red. Upon further inspection it’s definitely red and a whole lot of other things. It looks like a hole or a mass in his back. I’m not sure what this is or what caused it. I just got him on Wednesday from the shelter where up until this previous weekend he was with a friend (who unfortunately passed away from what they think was old age). I’m not sure how old he is but I’d guess anywhere from 4-6 years. Anyways I’m hoping someone can give some advice on what this is or might be. I do have three other piggies who haven’t been in a lot of contact with him because he’s new around here and I’m trying to let them all slowly adjust. He’s eating well and quite active so I wouldn’t have suspected a thing. I’ve attached the best pictures I could get without upsetting him to much. 3084AEC2-A05F-42D4-8AD2-25F7DEDE1196.webp9EBCCB3A-B3F0-4A5E-B57C-C5C0361F3D7E.webp6C2875CA-8F79-4A55-9095-D3906BB0DD96.webp1621FFAD-6655-43C4-BF38-C9D21AC00C6B.webpCD00FA7B-A2AC-4B73-931E-88E194A3048A.webp

Hi!

Please have your piggy seen what looks rather like a burst cyst or abscess of some sort to ensure that it doesn't get infected and/or comes back worse.

It could be a cyst or an abscess but only a hands on vet check will give you a diagnosis. Please have him checked by a vet.

As we mentioned on your other thread, as all your piggies are boars, please don’t put them all together as you risk fights. Their contact must be through bars only

I definitely will make an appointment asap! Thanks for your help☺️

I’m going to make him an appointment asap! Thanks☺️ Also they all have their own houses that aren’t together. Safety, health, and happiness are my priorities😅

We took him to the vet this morning and they confirmed it is an infected cyst. They removed it, cleaned it, and gave us meds. They also told us to clean it everyday, so if anyone knows the best supplies to use and ways to keep it extra clean I would love to know! Thanks again for the help earlier☺️

Good to hear.
Did your vet give you any suggestions about how to keep it clean?
I don’t have the experience to offer an answer
She told us to use anti bacterial soap and clean around the area once a day and the antibacterial drops that she gave us twice a day. I'm just a little worried about the cleaning around the area because he is quite fuzzy and I don’t want to have soap left on his skin and I really don’t want to hurt or upset him in anyway even though it’s important to keep the area clean

Mabye get a baby wipe and gently wipe the soap away? ( I am not experienced with this PLEASE don't try that without research... I hope he gets better.)

What meds were you given?
What soap has a vet told you to use? Don’t use any human soap on it - may be far too harsh for sensitive piggy skin.
To clean a wound we recommend a saline solution which you can either buy or make yourself by adding a teaspoon of salt to boiling water, letting it cool before use

She gave us SMZ (attached photo) that we give him orally every 12 hrs and baytril drops to drop in/on the area. Also recommended a dab of dawn antibacterial soap for cleaning around the area and then wiping down with a wet cloth. I will definitely give the saline solution a try!

Hi everyone! It’s been a few days now and I thought I would give an update on Mickey Pickle☺️ He’s been to the vet and they cleaned him up and we have been treating him twice daily. He’s not a good medicine taker like my Ozzy was😅 the area seems to be healing up which is fabulous! It looks a little nasty right now as it is an open sore, so if that stuff isn’t for you then skip the picture😂 just showing his progress! Thanks everyone for all your help💗💗CECD4FF2-3A1D-46C8-BF2D-DADD2791E70C.webp

Hi again everyone, it’s been quite a while since i posted about this but I’m back again with a question or two😅 so after treating the spot for 2 1/2 weeks I stopped (as directed by my vet at the first appt) putting the medicine in the open sore because I noticed Pickle was biting at it and licking the sore after I would do that. I cleaned it a few more times after that but eventually stopped because he would itch, bite, and lick after that too and I didn’t want him to get another infection. It seemed to be ok and healing up well but tonight I noticed it looks, well not the best😬 does this look like it’s infected again? Is this part of the healing process?450931D6-FBD5-40DC-AEC1-5A839DFCB381.webp
