My Guinea Pig (Brownie) she had a watery eye yesterday and white discharge today. I’ve used a flashlight and I cannot see an eye poke. I’ve moved her eye lid and there is no hay stuck under there that I can see.

I bought some terramycin ointment coming tomorrow off of Amazon. It’s not over the counter here so I’m lucky I can get it on Amazon. I have got some sugar free liquid vitamin c come if too. Is this enough to clear it up. How many times a day do I put on the ointment. Also, do I separate her from her herd while she’s getting better?

I wanted to add her eye isn’t cloudy at all.

Please get your guinea pig checked by a vet, home treatments can more often than not make the issue worse and/or remove any evidence of the issue, therefore prolonging it. Eye issues can deteriorate quickly so it would be best to get her seen in as soon as possible.
The vet will likely prescribe some sort of antibiotic eye drop and maybe even some painkiller.

No medical separation is not advised, the herd will have been exposed to any bacteria already and will add unneeded stress.

I hope it is nothing too serious x

:agr:

Please see a vet for diagnosis and don’t be tempted to home treat. I am aware that antibiotic drops can be purchased in your part of the world but the forum obeys UK law and as such we can’t advise the use of home treatments.

We nor you can know whether your piggy has a haypoke injury, what damage has been done or whether there is something else going on. Treatment can only be given following a hands on check by a qualified vet with the dosages and timings of medications dependent upon that diagnosis. They can also need painkillers for an eye injury which a vet needs to prescribe accordingly.

Vitamin c is not needed for an eye injury, it won’t help.
She should not be separated her from her friends.

i hope she is ok

If you take her to the vet they will put a special dye in the eye to show up if there is any damage and they can have a far better look than we could at home. Just because you think there's no hay in there doesn't mean that it's not hay poke. The hay could have gone in there caused the damage and fell out, or it could be so far back that you can't see by just lifting the eye lid. It's definitely worth a vet check. Vet treatments for eye issues aren't usually too expensive but they will work better than any home remedies

Please get her checked out by a vet. My guinea pig had the same problem. First vet said it was conjunctivitis he went on antibiotic eye ointment. It didn’t improve. My guinea pig vet on 2 nd visit said eye is cloudy. Could be eye poke. His now on maxitrol eye ointment and now a slight improvement. Waiting for a guinea pig eye specialist to look at his eye. Please don’t use home remedies for eyes. Best to take her to a vet.

Update: Went to the Vet they put the dye in her eye, and the vet didn't find anything. The vet said it was conjunctivitis or chlamydia. Vet said to rinse with water when there is discharge and supplement vitamin C and it will probably go away. If it doesn't go away or go to both eyes and they will precribe some eye ointment. What is your opinions of what the vet said? Have you gone through the same thing? Any Advice?

I would find a different vet!
Rinsing with water and giving vitamin c is not going to fix conjunctivitis. Antibiotics are needed for that.

Yes your pig needs to see another vet for a second opinion. I wouldn’t be happy with that advice. She needs a ointment. Even when the vet thought my boy had conjunctivitis he had a antibiotic eye ointment 3 times a day.

Thank you for sharing. You all have been so helpful. I have bad OCD and sometimes I don’t know if my thoughts were garbage or not. I was not happy with this vet visit. I will go see another vet.
