I was wondering what the average life span for guinea pigs is? My two are almost 5 and all my friends think they're old cos all their piggies died at about one! I think my guinea pigs are not old, don't they live till about 9 or something like that? I hope to God i won't be losing mine anytime soon! :( They are the most lovely little things ever and seem healthy. x

I have found over the years that average life-span is 4 years plus or minus 3 months ie three and three quarter years to four and a quarter years. My oldest sow died yesterday aged 5 years and 6 weeks.
However, I know of a pig that will be twelve years old at Christmas!
Recently I was given a boar who is nine years old.
I have had pigs die at only 6 months old, so there is quite a big variation. If you take 4 years as the average and regard anything more as a bonus you won't be disappointed if they die at that age and will be pleased if they live to be older.

Count 5-7 years as a good lifespan; however, guinea pigs can live longer. The oldest recorded piggy lived to over 14 years.

I grew up with a boy who lived to almost 10 years.

Georgie will be 8 in January and is still going strong and living a full and happy life, I do think I am very very lucky with her though xx

I hope your later boy friends lived a longer life.

You do have to watch your words closely round here. I find myself double- checking that I've got my words right before I post. :))

I've had one guinea pass at an estimated age of 6, but the two I have lost with the most definite ages were 4 years 6 months, and 4 years 10 months.

Ive found 4 to be the average, we have lost some very young but those were rescued ones where we had not got much history or ones that were very inbred.

When I grew up one of our guineas Fudge lived until 10:)

Monty will be 5 soon!

Here is Fudge from many years ago she was nearing 10 when the photo was taken:

I remember having Vimto with a packet of crisps when I was about 4 years old, delicious!!
You can buy Vimto as a cordial, better value than the pop variety.

I will not ask about whips and chains, it may be misunderstood.

I hope mine will be older than 4... Mine are a year apart, Chicken 1,5, Bo 2,5 and Martha 3,5. In a week I will bring Örat home too and she's 4,5 years. Maybe she's living on borrowed time already? I'm glad to read about healthy 8 year olds!
