I have just been in to say goodnight to my boys and top up their hay, when Vader (who is always vocal when he hears me coming) started to make a loud chirping noise , very much like baby birds, the others all stood rooted to the spot and even the cat who was outside on the patio pricked her ears and stood staring.

I was in the shed at this time and was talking to them all gently in case they were frightened and this went on for over 5 mins (typically he stopped when my hubbie came out with the ipad to record it!)
What does this sound mean- he sounded as if he was singing, but it was the reaction of the others that worried me - needless to say they each had big loves and kisses incase they were frightened and 2 bay leaves each (Their MOST favourite food) to make them happy

ANY IDEAS??

This is a huge mystery as nobody can be sure on what chirping means. There are all sorts of theories but none can be applied for each case. Some would say you are very lucky to hear this as it is rare.

I have only ever had one chirper and ive had a lot of pigs. Its very special and infrequent. Ive heard it only 3 times from my sow whi is now about 3 and half!

My understanding is that no one knows for sure exactly what it signifies or what is being communicated. It does seem like the other pigs listen very intently to it! I've had pigs for about five and a half years now and have only heard this two or three times at random intervals. I have no clue what they are talking about, but the other pig seems to know! LOL!

I'm not sure, but I looked it up and someone said that the guinea pig may be in a trance-like state.

Nobody really knows and there are lots of theories around as to what it can mean. Generally, the other piggies go very quiet and listen intently.

I have had lots of piggies over many years, but I have so far only two "singers". It is very special if you get to hear it as it can really sound like a bird is chirping! Feel blessed!

ive only ever heard this once and it was from my old boar when his cagemate died :( I always assumed it was because he was sad but it obviously it cant mean they are sad as yours lives in a group xx

We have had 8 piggies and have got one chirper! I thought my daughter was bonkers when she first told me her guinea pig was singing! I've only heard it once in 3 years!

This is really fascinating, I so wish I could have recorded it , but stayed still as I didn't want to miss a second- yes all the other were in a trance like stance (even the cat! and me-lol) and unfortunately Vader has never repeated it, he is still very vocal, but not tuneful:lol!:

Thanks everyone for trying to enlighten me
