For those who have a tray under their hay racks, what do you put in it to soak up the pee? My lot pee in the tray while they eat and am looking for something that is absorbant but not smelly

For the ones that use their litter boxes excessively I put newspaper and then cut out a puppy pad and then layer that with hay and then put hay on the outer rim of that. For the ones that don't create as much waste I just use a puppy pad. Mine are basically litter trained. The hay on top keeps them from eating the puppy pad altogether. :)) Cleaned out once a day.

Don't know if that helps you out much.

Thank you. I have tried newspaper and they eat it or shred it and throw it all over the place so I imagine they would probably do the same to puppy pads. Doesnt matter how much hay I pile on top, they still pull the paper out rolleyes

:)) Yeah, pigs will be pigs :p

Then I'm stumped as to what you could use. mallethead

have you tried a small amount of sawdust with a couple of layers of newspaper underneath?
i know there's debate about whether sawdust is good for pigs feet or not, but if it's in a small area that they won't be in all the time i'd give it a go. it is very absorbent.

I have tried newspaper with several things on top - woodshavings, hay and megazorb but they pull all the top out which messes the cage up nicely :)) then chew up the newspaper so I have stopped putting newspaper in it now. I have been putting woodshavings in the bottom with hay on top for now until I can find something better ;)

I have been thinking similar thoughts Jools! My lot just have newspaper and hay - no hay racks at the moment but I'm going to stick some up again today - but I'm considering putting something more absorbant in the trays to make the paper last longer.

Have you tried fitting the paper flat in the bottom of the trays, so there are no sides sticking up to encourage little nibblers to pull at the paper? That way you can cover the paper up completely, so no piggies pulling it out, but you've still got that between the absorbant bedding and the bottom of the tray, making it a bit easier to remove the yucky litter.

I sympathise with you as I too have the same problem of pigs dragging the newspaper out the hay trays, it's one of the worst things they do, especially when they've only been cleaned out that day!

Laura, I have sat and measured out paper to fit it into trays so that there isnt a single bit sticking up that they could pull and they have still managed to sink their teeth into the middle, made a hole then chewed from there....sneaky wee sausages :))

Whoever said piggies weren't smart...! Cheeky guins. :))
Oh well, at least you've tried!

I tried loads of things but they either kicked it everywhere (wood shavings, auboise, megazorb etc...) or it got way too smelly and moist to quickly (hay) even with changing every day.

I have eventually settled on a made to measure (by me) liner out of fleece which goes in the tray and then up and over the sides. My piggies all love to sleep in their litter trays and with the dampness and muckyness issue with other litters fleece is the best option (for me at least). I hoover or sweep poos and hay that has been pulled down from the hay racks twice a day and change the fleece every other day. I have several sets and wash these separately to the other bed and fleece as it is very stuck up with hay.

our piggie is (thank goodness) uses his litter tray perfectly and he has megazorb in it then hay gradually fills up underneath from the hayracks :D
