What do you use for bedding in the hutch?

Hi again,

Another question from a newbie guinea pig owner!

We have had our girls Sadie and Willow since Thursday, they live indoors in our spare bedroom in a hutch, and they spend time out in the garden in a run during the day (weather permitting)

The bedding we have used in their hutch is:

A layer of newspaper
A thick layer of woodshavings
A layer of carefresh

And then in the bedroom part we also use a layer of hay on top.

They also have a hayrack in the main part.

Does this sound ok to you? Just wondering how others on here set up their hutches and what materials you use.

My two girls drink LOADS and therefore also wee loads too! So any suggestions on the most absorbant materials would be great.

I am so in love with the girls they are so cute and very friendly too, have had both out for cuddles which they seem happy with. Wish I'd known how lovely guinea pigs are in the past :)

I use a layer of newspaper and then a layer of megazorb in all my hutches. They all have a cardboard box filled with hay in their sleeping compartments, and a hay rack as well. It's very rare that any wet gets through to the floor of the hutch, unless my pair of destructive piggies have destroyed yet another water bottle.

I do a full clean out every 3-5 days, depending on the piggies, some are neat and only wee in one corner so I can scoop it out daily, others look like they've been rioting after only a day or 2.

My guinea pigs have outdoor hutches and runs, so I use woodshavings in the hutches, and hay in the sleeping area. They also have hayracks.

And the hutches have plastic floors (the walls are wooden) so it is very easy to clean out.

I clean the sleeping areas about every 2-3 days, depending on how much they've poohed! If it looks dirty then I clean it. Then about once a week I clean out the rest of the hutch and run (they have a run on concrete for the winter and one on grass for the summer).

I wish they would be like the rabbits who are littertrained! I'm going to try to litter train them if I can find some smaller rodent litter trays, but can only find ones for rabbits or cats. :)

The set up you have sounds fine :D I used to use woodshavings or carefresh but now i swear by fleece. No bedding is kicked out, our piggys love it and its pretty too. Plus once you have the materials which are cheap anyway there are no costs for a very long time. we use towels under the fleece which absorbs the urine so the fleece stays dry, we change the eating area every 2-3 days and the rest is only washed once a week. ps we do need to pick up the poos in the day but i dont mind this as i get to go in there with them while they push and nudge me out the way so they can run around and under me!
