I am going to have a go at making a " how to make a fleece cage liner " thread . I would be interested to know what materials can be used as the absorbent inner layer . I always use towels - as that is what I have got ! I have heard of people using mattress protectors . Anyone use anything else ?

PS - I am no seamstress so. if anyone wants to proof read my draft before it goes official - please let me know !

Lol same I can't sew either but what I do is I just put plastic dog mats ( the rectangular plastic mats which sit under dogs bowls to stop mess if u know what I mean, and can be found in any animal shop but I got mine in wilkinsons) down on his cage as the first layer as they stop anything like pee going through, then I use an extra large towel from primark and fold it and lay it on top of the mats to absorb pee and water from his bottle. After that I use a blanket that I also got from primark( but make sure fluff doesn't pull out from it other wise it can get stuck in their teeth) and I used to just fold it so it fit my cage but now I do actually sew them so they are the right length and I know nothing about sewing soooooo, yeah. Anyway, recap, i use plastic dog mats ,towel then blanket and bobs your uncle , also u have to use non scented, non bio washing powder as well to clean it and make sure to do spot checks with a dust pan and brush daily ! Lol good luck

No idea - I just use double layer fleece and puppy pads underneath to catch the wee. If you find out please share as I might make some new ones.

You could try a washable mattress protector which is absorbent like the disposable puppy pads - just cut to size to fit and remove when wet and wash - they are lighter than most bath towels so should dry quicker too.

fingers crossed you will get a good solution though!

I seem to remember someone once starting a thread on here about making cage liners, and I think they said they used a special material called "Zorb" for the inside. You can buy it on ebay for £15.50 a metre, and it certainly sounds ultra absorbent.

Keep meaning to have a go at making liners myself! Just procrastinating really!

I use bed pad things, they're washable and last a long time, you can get them from Amazon for around the same price as a towel and they seem to be more abaorbant than a towel too :) I'll see if I can find you a link for them and you can check them out. I'll edit this once I've found them :)

Thank you . I have heard of things like wadding .

Do you sew your cage liners Cat ? - or do you just put layers in the cage ?

I sew them :) I have a couple pre made but I've started sewing my own now. I sewed one by hand but it was alot of hard work so I got a sewing machine for Christmas which I'm about to figure out how to use!
But if you want any tips for hand sewing them I'm happy to help in any way :)! And also machine sewing as my mum is a sewing master and she's taught me alot haha.

I machine sew mine - but I'm no seamstress and can't sew straight !

I don't stand a chance unless I tack in a straight line and follow the tacking when I machine sew.

I'm thinking of adding something to this sticky

How to make a cage liner (with pic's)

I made two from a layer of fleece with a washable bed pad sewn underneath. They work really well and are easy to use. They do take a long time to dry though. I made them to fit the cage I first had for my two boys but then I extended the cage so needed something else as well. Currently I have half the cage covered in my home made pads and the other half has a loose fleece on top and two layers of micro towels undear earth. The sort you use for camping or taking to the gym. This also works really well and dries super fast after washing.

Yes Zorb is the really good stuff. Have a search for what goes into the Inside of babies nappies. That's the sort of stuff you want. Hemp cloth is a very absorbent baby nappy. I used washable nappies for all 3 of my children so have lots of experience of absorbent fabrics (didn't make the nappies myself tho!)
