Hiya,

I don't actually NEED a new cage for our new piggies, but I do think I'd like something elevated after ours drowned in a flood, and was looking at this http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small_pets/hutches_cages/guinea_pig_cages/120_cm_cages/95923

we're very limited for space so the cage lives in the kitchen, under a worktop area, but this would make it much easier for me to move around and clean out etc, plus I could store the hay etc underneath. I've looked at C&C cages, but because of having two young children I really need to be able to fasten the cage up securely, and have something they can't tip over/pull apart etc, plus because I'd want to elevate it and have a "lid" a C&C would be more expensive to make.

Anyone think it would be ok?

Hi Hellsbells82!

I looked at the exact same cage for my pigs...the only reason I didn't end up choosing this one over one on that would sit on the floor is that I thought the pigs would spend a lot of time in the bottom tray and as they aren't the best of animals for climbing (and definitely not built for it!), I didn't think they'd be keen on trying to get up the ramps and would be a bit fiddly.

But, if you've been having floods then I think it's perfect...plus I don't think pigs really appreciate us staring down on them from such great heights- so it might make it a little less stressful for them too!

And on the plus side- I ordered my cage from the same website and delivery was fantastic!

:)

Thanks, I'm not sure they'd sue the ramps, but was thinking I could always make my own ramps/tunnels/upper level later- I think the reason it appeals is that my youngest child is obsessed with piggies, and at least this way he's be at eye level with them, rather than constantly trying to lean over the top to watch them.

We've only had one flood, after a burst pipe, but it was a pretty dramatic 2.5k worth of damage and our poor piggies drowned as the tray of their cage filled with water- think I'd worry less if they were off the ground

I'm so sorry to hear about your poor piggies who drowned, that must have been awful :'(

Cage looks great, you might have to adjust the ramps, my two didnt use the ramp for weeks in their new two story cage until we covered it in fabric, lessened the angle of it and enclosed it like a tunnel, silly pigs didnt know they had an upstairs, now they love it :D

right I just need to wait for the OH to go to work so I can measure the space without him noticing- then the new cage will just magically "appear" one day :))

I have this cage and love it. They used the ramps but I took them off and have a fiddlestix and a grassy house thing that they get up from. They also sit on them. It's a shame it won't fit.

was thinking, would it fit if you didn't use the wheely bits?

ooohh do they unscrew? that maybe an option... am now wondering whether to order it anyway, and use it without the frame if neccessary, we're going to be having some building work done in the kitchen so they'll need to move anyway, and being able to wheel them round the house would be a definate advantage (I can also then put them in our bedroom in the day and wheel them out before OH gets home while the work is being done:))

You don't have to use the wheels as they just screw into the metal bars.

The stand is actually part of the frame so you'd have to use it as it comes. The base slides in and out of the frame for cleaning purposes (hence the reason why you cannot use it without the stand or even the frame section). I've used quite a few ferplast cages and normally you have to remove the whole top cage section to clean the base - so you'll definitely find these cages much less time consuming for cleaning.

my cage (which is essentially just a bigger version of the one you are looking at) came in 12 parts (not including the wheels and fixings) - so is flat packed and will require assembling.

This is the cage as I have it from both sides.

I now have a section of profleece hanging over the fiddlestix which has gone down well too. They like to lie on it.

ahh brilliant thanks- sorry to be a pain, but would you say the wheels are more or less than 3cm? We have a perfect space for a longish cage (upto 140cm) under a spare kitchen work surface which is where our pigs were, and it's the only real place for them so don't want to get a cage that's too tall- but this one looks ideal if I could squeeze it under, plus they'd feel secure as the work surface would be right above them so it's like a giant cave!

They're actually going to be ripping the kitchen work surfaces out in a few weeks because of the flood damage, so wonder if I could persuade them to more the counter up a few cm?

Ive just measured mine and from the floor to the metal bar the wheels screw in to is just over 5cm.

They are great cages and look very nice (ive got two of the larger ones in my dining room) You could order it - assemble it and check if it fits underneath your work surface without the wheels - if it does (or doesn't) then you have the option to ask the workmen if they'll re-fit your surfaces just a few cm higher where you'd like the cage.

good luck :) Your new piggies will certainly be living in style :))

In terms of the ramps - some people on here have used material tunnels using velcro to attach them. In my cage ive just lined the ramp with carpet (but my ramp is only very small so my piggies have never had a problem using it - even two 3wks old babies were running up and down them)

oh thank you soooo much, I measured again and am definitely only 2.5-3cm short so it should fit - yippeeee, I haven't told my OH but figure I'll just tell him it cost a tenner when it appears- or that it came off freecycle or similar :))

yippeee- have just ordered my new cage, got the 10% off, plus 5% cashback from Quidco, so it's cost me just over £50, less than the C&C cage would have as I'd have needed to cover the top over, I like the fact the cage will be elevated enough so that the kids won't be able to loom over the top of it, at the moment the cage we have is on top of the work surface in the kitchen (due to us still being in chaos after our flood) and the new piggies seem really happy to be up high- we must look really short to them!

I've just won the 150cm version of this cage on ebay! Only £50, brand new, but it has a crack in one corner, which looks easy enough to fix from the pics.

Hoping to collect it this weekend - can't wait to get my hands on it! Tracey
