Sorry if this has already been discussed,I tried searching but couldn't find anything :(

My new hutch arrived today and I am hoping to have it set up and my girls put it in tomorrow
I was just wondering how people set up there hutches? As I don't think the way I used to do it will be suitable or is he best way

My old hutch is a wooden hutch all over, I used to put a few layers of newspaper down along be whole hutch and inside be wooden sleepy house I bought them, I'd them scattered a layer of sawdust over the main area and fill the sleepy house with hay. This is what I was advised to do when I got them.

My new hutch has plastic covering the base of each level (it has 2 levels) and the bases pull out to be easily cleaned,I'm now wondering if newspaper and sawdust are the best thing to cover the floor with or if I could/should use something else.

I'm not too keen on using fleece as I used fleece for there indoor play pen and found it really horrible to clean and get all the hay etc off before it went in the washing machine

I'd just stick with what you're doing, having the plastic covering will just make it easier to clean, my wooden hutch has rhino floor covering (heavy duty lino) over which has snowflake wood chippings in the day area, and snowflake with copious amounts of hay in the night area. ;)

Thanks I'll stick to newspaper and wood shavings.
Do you spray your lino with anything when you clean your hutch out? Or just replace the newspaper etc

I just use hutch disinfectant, no need for newspaper as the snowflake is very absorbent. ;)

I'm sorry if this is a really silly question but how do you clean your hutch?
I use the newspaper to try and fold it all up into a package.
If you don't use newspaper how do you clear out the old bedding?

I find cleaning out the hutch a bit difficult and end up with more old bedding all over myself and the floor than in the bin, no matter what I try and do
I've actually hoovered my garden because of how much I once spilt and didn't want to leave it all on the floor lol

I use a dustpan and brush, scoop everything out into a bag and empty it into my garden bin. I then brush the floor of the shed and put that into the bin. Then I refill the hutches and wait 5 minutes until they wreck them again! :))

A dustpan and brush -I never thought about using that and it's such a simple solution, I've just been scooping it with my hands lol
I am going to ho get one and hopefully cleaning day will be a lot easier
Thanks

I bought a cheap one from a discount store, doesn't need to be expensive, you'll find it a lot easier. I save my bags from my snowflake bales as my garden bins don't get emptied during December, January and February. I fill the bags with used bedding and store them in my gardening shed until they start emptying them again and I fill them up. I have 2 bins, 1 bin can hold used bedding from 2 hutches for 3 weeks, so I soon get rid of the backlog. ;)

My garden bin hasn't been emptied recently and I found out its because Id put the wood shavings wrapped in the newspaper in it. they can't empty it as the newspaper is supposed to go in the recycling not the garden bin.
I hope they don't stop emptying my garden bin over winter, I'll need to find out

Which is why I don't use newspaper, you won't need to with plastic coated floors, the shavings will do the trick. ;)

I Hoover outside my front door as well as the fleece gets bundled up and put outside until I wash it.I had to stop putting my waste in my green bin as they refused to take it.

That's Carlisle city council for you, Allerdale out west is far more accommodating. ;)

Our councilwon't even allow shavings or ANY pet waste in the green or blue bin. I have to double bag it and then take it to the dump. Then I have to tell them it's pet waste otherwise they get really fractious. It's like I am dumping nuclear waste! I once lost the plot and told them it was a damn site cleaner and better than human waste and to stop being wimps...did'nt help but made me feel better lol!
