Hi, my piggie with CBS started making this noise at Christmas but just for a few hours. Then it didnt come back until the end of January, off and on just a couple of times. Then it stayed for a couple of days so I brought her to the vet. she didnt make the noise at the vet and they couldnt hear any issue in her chest or lungs, but gave me a course of antibiotics just in case. Its day 8 of the antibiotics and the noise has reappeared. It always seems like its coming from her nose, not deep in her chest or anything. She never sneezes, has a wet nose, and has been maintaining her weight. Could this be dust from bedding/hay and shes just particularly sensitive? She is getting her teeth checked in a couple of weeks too

Hi still wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this..she is due to get her teeth checked in two weeks and the vets want me to keep her on baytril until then so she will be on it twice daily for over three weeks. I'm not so happy about this because we don't even think she has a URI and has no other symptoms at all ..

That is not a normal sound; I get it occasionally from inhaled hay dust but it always disappears quickly with a good old sneeze.

It sounds like a potential developing obstruction/narrowing of the already very small nasal passages if it is permanent and you haven't changed your opened a new hay bag or used other potential irritants in the home. Guinea pigs are not much in the way of mouth breathers (they only do it when in respiratory distress in a life or death situation); but that means that any little or larger obstruction is a lot more audible.

Piggies are unfortunately very good at suppressing symptoms when at the vets. If possible, come armed with a videoto show the vet.

Thanks for replying! Its not permanent, its been on and off and usually only lasts a few hours. None of our other pigs ever do this so we thought maybe she is just sensitive to the dust in bedding/hay. Do you think its right to have her on antibiotics when this is the only symptom? Its been 9 days on them already and she made the noise yesterday (it only lasted a few hours)

Hi

Please always finish a course of antibiotics and only stop early with your vet's OK because otherwise you will contribute to the resistancy problem.
