Hello there everyone!

For context, my guinea pigs are very young and small. I think they are almost 2 months old but they are indeed still tiny babies.

These are my first guinea pigs, so I am incredibly cautious in terms of messing things up.

So, the question: what do these sounds mean?

I have taken a video of this sound here.

I believe there will be more questions I have in the future, and I'm also very new to this site, so I hope to see more of you soon.

Thank you so much!

They're so cute! I think that's the inquisitive "where are we, what's this?" sound.

Aw thank you!

If that's the case, then that's good. I just hope they aren't scared of me or anything. They tend to run from me when they're in the cage at the moment.

Thank you for letting me know what you think c:

You're welcome :) Being prey animals their instinct to run away is very strong...not all of my guineas would stand still when I went to stroke them in the cage. Also, sometimes they'll be happy to be picked and other times they'll make a run for it! Scared guineas make no sound and stay still...I have a rescue guinea at the moment who isn't used to being handled and she is silent and bug eyed when I take her out and stroke her...if I have another guinea out at the same time she will make the happy guinea pig sound when stroked as she feels safer.

Ah that's interesting, actually. I can relate to the 'sometimes they're fine to be picked up, sometimes they aren't' thing. Mm yeah interesting. Thanks!

To me that sounds like what we call "piggy on the move" which our two make when they are exploring and communicating with each other so I think what I am saying is it sounds like a positive rather than negative sound. Really scared guinea pigs play dead, so they literally freeze.
They are very cute by the way!

Arrr glad u put this on hunny I'm a new guinea pig mum and mine also do this I was worried it sent they was scared or something so thank you :P

Thank you so much for responding. That's really encouraging. Also, thank you c: They are very sweet-natured, also.

We just called it the guinea pig happy noise... our pigs do it when they are puttering around or being patted. Some of them have been louder than others. They certainly are not distressed, it's more of a happy/busy noise.

Is it still OK to handle them when they're scared? I've got 2 rescue boys just a few days ago who are about 5 months old who haven't made a sound yet and have barely moved. I'd love to get them used to being handled but don't want to traumatise them!

I think once they feel more settled in their new home you could start getting them more used to being handled. My rescue will lie comfortably on me...when I first got her she was going berserk when I got her out of the box but she was accepted straight away by my other 2 piggies and she settled in. Your boys will probably be happiest to be out together. Having nice treats may help them get used to being in their new home...my rescue piggie will edge out from under cover to take a grape or other fruit from my hand.
