Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering what guinea.pigs can be given if they have allergies?

One of my boys has been getting a chesty sound off and on for months and absolutely nothing has helped him. I stopped giving him Timothy hay thinking it may be the pollen in it but he's still having issues. He's on orchard grass and oaten hay. I havn't tried maybe just feeding oaten doing like a total and error thing. Oh one thing though he is on oxbow pellets with Timothy hay in them the Timothy was my suspect but he's been on the pellets for years.

I've tried metacam made no difference have him on a Baytril course at the moment but no difference at all it's just a trial to see if there was a difference.

I really believe this is an allergy he has no symptoms of anything eyes fine coat fine weight fine eating fine great condition no crustyness or discharge.

I went to give him metacam tonight again then realised again it's not for allergies I literally need an allergy pill for him.

Would love of this could be an info sharing post as there's nothing barely on the net on this subject.

Oh also only other thing I can think of is bronchitis maybe? Even still no idea what to do there either. I'm looking to get an air purifier to see if it helps him.

Jess.

Hi

Have you had him seen and treated by a vet when it started? Respiratory infections can be very low load but if long term untreated or undertreated can cause some havoc later on.

True allergies in guinea pigs are rare.

:agr:
What tests has he had so far?
What did the vet recommend?

An air purifier might help, but he really needs to have a proper hands on check up first to rule out low grade infections or other causes for his problems.
