Hiya..

I have my piggies outside in hutch (will be moved to a Boyles shed soon). At the moment I am using vet bed with fleece over it but I was wondering if anyone knew of anything better for outdoor piggies?

Thanks

Dani xx

I use the horse bedding Aubiose for my shed-piggies. I haven't used anything else so cannot give a balanced view, but I love it and have no desire to try anything else!

Junior is a really good bedding as are other agencies style substrates such as Sundown, Easier, United, Softened. They are highly absorbant and very low on dust. I do really like the back2nature recycled paper pellets and like them. But for a large space are not really the cheapest option. Finacadd is pretty good too for large areas. That being said, I use a combination of any of these with clear cageliners also.

I'd just say, try lots of them out and see what you like best :)

I use Aubiose for my outdoor piggies, it's really good stuff and they love it. It's very absorbant, cost effective. I put in a deep layer all over, with hay to the ceiling in the bedroom area

just wondered do you use newspaper under the aubiose,or alone?how often do you need to spot clean/full clean and how many piggies .

Hi Eileen,

Yes so I do a thick layer of newspaper, with Aubiose on top all throughout the hutch and I put extra where they go to wee. I wouldn't recommend using Aubiose without newspaper as it makes cleaning out much more time consuming. The great thing about Aubiose if you have a garden, is that it composts very easily and we use it as a mulch around plants, so it doesn't go in the bin.
I spot clean lightly with a dustpan and brush to remove the bulk of poops in the main living area once a day, my piggies don't go to the loo in their bedroom compartment so I never have to spot clean that. I have two girls. I do a full clean twice a week, though to be honest if you spot clean whilst also removing the toilet bits and then replenish - you could probably do once a week. I like to do it twice a week as my girls are outside and I can't bear the thought of wet bedding.
It is very absorbent and I do a layer deep enough so that it covers where the clean out tray of the hutch meets the hutch side, so it prevents draughts too. I pay £10.99 for a bale and it lasts me over month with my two. It's also really low on dust and my girls feet are perfect, no redness or anything, highly recommend it.

I'm the opposite! I don't use paper under the aubiose, but they do most of their toilet in particular places so they have strategically placed trays that I totally empty once per week and I spot clean / total hay change these areas twice per day. My bales are about £8.90 each for 20kg and last about a month for three (small) pigs in about 24 sq feet, with at least an inch of bedding all over.

Thanks, i will use a layer of puppypads and a deep layer of aubiose, ive 5 cages/hutches with 3 to 4 piggies on each floor,i recon i will need to change twice aweek!:)
