just wondering what bedding you all use in your hutches.
I currently use a layer of newspaper topped with shavings and in the bed area a layer of newspaper, shavings and hay on top for them to burrow into.
I like using the shavings, it's easy to spot clean, however all the shavings fall out the bottom layer of the hutch when you open the door! Looking into alternatives

I don't use newspaper any more - I find it easier to spot clean without.

Have you tried Aubiose? Is there a Kennelgate near you - Kennelgate sell Aubiose.

We use Verdo, which is a wood pellet you soak into a fine shavings powder, it semi solidifies in the hutch so all you need to do is brush the poo's up every day and dig the wee's out every couple of days. It's awesome stuff, I have kept my horses on it for years!
Currently as we have pregnant girlies we have newspaper over the top of the verdo and hay soft straw on top of that, when they have littered and the pups are moving around well we will take out the newspaper tops and just have the hay in the corner like we did before they started to get to the end of their gestation.

We find that shavings get everywhere, are harder to spot clean, and with Piper and Bluey being Abruvians and having long hair it makes them matt up and smell very piddly! xx

I only use bedding in their sleeping/eating area. On the bottom I use a puppy pad with a layer of fleece on top of it. In their wooden sleeping house I use a fleece sleeping bag I make for them. Under their hay rack I have a box with a mix of Back to Nature and aubiose. Works the best for me :)

Other than what the others have suggested, there is easibed. You might have the same problem with it spilling everywhere, but when I used it, I found it was a little less trouble. You could also make a border to stop it falling out :)

@Smile124x my dad fixed wood across inside front of hutch to keep all shavings in when the doors are opened, saves a lot of mess :)

I use fleece liners in the main areas of the hutch (these are flipped the next day then replaced the next) - and then a puppy pad covered with a thick layer of hay in the bedroom area - the problem I found with newspapers once the weather gets much colder and wetter is that even though the hutch was in a shed the newspaper quickly got wet and stayed very wet even just overnight - so I ditched the newspaper.

In winter I am going to add a layer of Snowflake bedding below the thick layer of hay to help with absorption should it need it as its great. This will be the first winter the boys will have been in the shed in hutches with fleece liners so will see how well they stay dry.

I think the try is to try a few methods without buying huge amounts of each and see what works best. Then when you find the right balance of what works for you then bulk buy to save the pennies :tu:

p.s. It all comes down to how much your pigs love to pee on the hay or the fleece/other bedding, too and also how many you have too.
