Hello, I have a 5 month old guinea pig. He's the only one so doesn't have to fight for food or anything (rescued him and he is used to being alone- although he loves snuggles with the dog) and I asked the vet what his feeding schedule should be and he said to make sure he has veg, hay and guinea nuggets but wasn't very helpful with when I should feed him that.

I know that every pig is different but I wondered if anyone knows what is best? At the moment I try and make sure he always has some hay, I give him a bowl of veggies in a morning and some of th nuggets of an afternoon and every so often through the week give him an orange slice or grape (although he's definitely more of a savoury fan)

So I suppose I'm curious of how any of you schedule feeding and if you have any advice? Any comment you have will be useful, thank you!

Hello :)

Here is a thread worth having a read of Recommendations For A Balanced General Guinea Pig Diet

Very important is unlimited hay in piggies diet.

We feed ours this roughly
Morning:
Cucumber
Celery
1/6th of Red/Green/Yellow Bell Pepper (de-seeded)

Evening:
Cucumber
Two Little Gem Lettuce leaves or 10 sprigs Coriander. Twice a week we will swap in cabbage or parsley

We also add in to the above diet carrot, sweet potato, celery leaves and a few other things occasionally, but there are lots of info available in the food section of the forum,
.

Hi,

I feed my piggies twice a day. In the morning they get fresh veg, hay and the daily ration of pellets. In the evening it's again fresh veg and more hay (unlimited).

About once a week they get some fruit and dried forage.

Keeps them happy for now.

I feed 3-5 different veg each time, always some salad leaves plus cucumber, celery, peppers, carrot tops, coriander leaves, mint, parsley.....slightly depending what I will have for my work lunch box and dinner.

Fruit I keep it simple, mini tomatoes, apple, grapefruit. Tried strawberries and strawberry greens but we don't like those :td:

The pellet bowl is usually empty in the morning, it gets cleaned and filled up again. I don't feed a lot of it, about a big handful for 3.

Hope it helps.

We add fresh hay in the morning. In the evenings, I give some veggies when they get free roaming time in the hallway, add some more hay, and top up the pellets.

Add hay in the morning. Give fresh water. Give some veg or fresh after walking the dogs. Give them grass veg or hay at regular intervals through the day.

Pellets and more hay at night.

I work from home (as a carer for my mother) so its easy cor me to visit them a lot.

Replace water and hay in morning and quick spot clean of cage
Pop in and out during the day for hay, maybe forage etc
Another spot clean at night and replace hay/water while veg is given
Must admit I give them everyday but have a bit of a random time to feed pellets

Thanks everyone, this is all really useful I was feeling a bit lost after the vet made no suggestions!
