I went out of town and left my guinea pigs for boarding(at their vet only). Got a call how one was peeing blood so they are doing a urinalysis to see if it is a UTI(nothing too serious- just needs antibiotics) or bladder stones(more serious- may need surgery which isn't safe). Has anyone had experience on the peeing blood and what it usually is? She had a URI few months back but that was fixed and she was fine.

I’m sorry your piggy is unwell while you are away. I’ve had a piggy pee blood. It was a bladder stone but I think UTIs are more common so fingers crossed it’s a UTI. At least your piggy is in the best place. Good luck with the results.

Hi

I am very sorry. Not the news you want to come home to.

We can't tell you. Either can happen; you have to deal with what is found.

It is worth noting that with infections like sterile interstitial cystitis (which is non-bacterial) the urine can be intensely red because of a natural dye called porphyrine; the urine can test free of blood or contain some. It takes a lot of blood to colour it a slightly lighter red tone which is usually impossible to tell when you see it the first time; even seemingly clear urine can actually test high for blood. With infections of the urinary tract, it usually takes 5-7 days for initially off and on symptoms like squeaking when peeing to firm up.
Clear blood would point towards damage from a stone or a problem in the reproductive tract.

All the best.

The vet said apart from the blood she is fine. Could that be a sign for whether its a UTI or bladder stone? I'm hoping its a UTI as all she will need are antibiotics.

It can be either and only a vet can tell you which it is. Have the results come back yet?

She's in the best place! Hope it's just a bit of an infection and she's all sorted soon ❤️

Hi

It could be a sign of either. Did your vet palpate (feel) the bladder?

Usually they can feel whether there is a stone in there or if it is very thick and tight from a serious infection or not to get a quick impression of what could be going on and how serious it is.
