Rhino's chest infection has reocurred twice since it first showed in march, the last time was over two weeks ago which we thought had cleared up after 6 days of Septrin, but today it's back with a vengance and worse than ever, luckilly vets was still open so got some more Septrin which he has had one dose two hours ago, his mouth is wide open and his nostrils very flared on breathing.
If he gets through today I think he will be ok but i remember seeing a thread talking about another biotic which was good for chest infections but I cant find the thread.

Good luck my Rhino.

Baytril and Septrin seem to be the most common antibiotics used effectively - did your vet give Rhino a thorough examination ? Could it be Pneumonia ? Maybe he needs more than an antibiotic ?/
Sounds as though he is prone to chronic bouts and maybe resistant to the treatment - I am far from an expert in this but would be querying this possibility.
Dab Vicks Vapour near his pen so he can inhale the vapours but I would want a second opinion to be honest.

Firstly, as there has been no improvement with Septrin, it maybe that there is a lot of fluid in the lungs and a diruetic (furosemide) can be given by the vet to ease the breathing plus an anti-inflammatory (metacam) to cut down on the inflammation occuring. (I would certainly take your piggie back to the vet as an emergency if his breathing gets any worse over the weekend).

As to other antibiotics - There are a lot of antibiotics that should NOT be given to guinea pigs as they can knock out the gut flora and allow fatal clostridium and other bacterial infections to take hold causing diarrhoea and ultimately death- these include the peniclllins and cephalosporins

Only one antibiotic is licensed for piggies and that is baytril (hence why it is the one most often given). Septrin is being used more widely in guinea pigs by vets who are prepared to prescibe off-license and it doesn;t seem to cause upset tummies as much as baytril and is certainly better for stubborn infections such as repiratory or urinary but very often needs to be given for 3 weeks or more. There is one other antibiotic that is becoming increasingly more used and that is azithromax (azithromycin) which is very powerful but has been used to great effect when septrin hasn;t worked on deep seated respiratory infections or abcesses by vet Simon Maddox at the Cat and Rabbit clinic Dunston Northants

Its not just bacteria that cause repiratory problems however. so if septrin doesn;t work, a culture of the nose/throat should be taken to identify the bug concerned and find out what drugs it is sensitive to.

Thanks for kind replies, he's been on constant metacam since March.

Zithromax really is the best antibiotic for recurring URI's and pneumonia. It works where all else has failed.

If your vet would like to speak to mine, he would be able to tell him about it and dosages etc.

Thanks for that I will give my vet his number if my Rhino lasts until monday, it does not look good at the moment, he is only breathing once every 4 seconds and he is opening his mouth at that rate really wide almost yawning wide, thinking of trying oxygen as my brother in law uses it.

I have a sow here that came into the rescue with a URI and UTI. As it is possible she is pregnant I had her put on septrin. Her UTI has cleared, and her URI has improved but not gone. Seems to ahve improved to a certain degree and remained the same. I will continue to use the septrin until 14th, which will bring us to 3 weeks, but if it's still continuing to linger, I will be asking for her to go onto zithromax. I've only used it once before and was very impressed with it. Is your boy on the correct dose for his weight?

We took Rhino to an out of hours vets at 6pm, he was put inside an oxygen tent straight away, then he was x rayed which did not show his lungs or heart so the vet said he had a very serious infection, the x ray also showed his stomach full of air as his lungs could not take any due to the infection, the vet said his chances were not good especially as he seems so prone to infection due to large scarring on his lungs from previous episodes, after an hour in the oxygen tent Rhino had shown no improvement and as he had had a difficult short little life of just over a year we decided not to risk further misery on him and asked the vet to put him to sleep.

Thank you little Rhino, you entered our hearts the day we found you and you will never leave us, sleep well and peaceful my love.
