Ok on my Piggies home I do not use saw dust, however in their bedding area I put news paper on the floor to keep the cold away and then put some bedding hay down. However of late the girls just empty it out and throw it all over their hutch.

I was thinking it was because of late its been warm and perhaps they are too hot. Is this normal, they both look very happy?

Oh I've tried neat little trays of hay, it never works for my scatty lot as they immediately work on playing with it and scattering it all over! I wouldn't be too concerned, they just like to trample all over it and probably try burrowing as well, I dare say they are enjoying themselves!

Guinea pigs are extremely messy! it is perfectly normal-10 minutes after cleaning out, it looks like I haven't done it for days :))

I may be wrong, but wouldn't burying themselves be a major survival mechanism in the wild? I don't mean as in tunnels, just surrounding themselves with something to make them feel safer...

Guinea pigs live in grasslands, so there is lots of natural cover. That is the reason for "piggie trains", walking single file with a leader at the top who will be most likely to come upon danger. It also explains why they are so chatty - they keep in contact that way! The nosiest are the babies and youngsters, when inexperience makes them most prone to fall prey.

Piggies use any exisitng cover and empty sets, but do not need to burrow. The main predators are birds of prey, that's why they don't like to be towered over and react to sharp movements.

With four pigs, I'm hoovering the living room daily - and the minute they step out of the cage it looks like we had the Huns through YET AGAIN!

when my piggies have a play session/popcorn/get startled they run around making a clear path through all the hay,it actually doesn't look like they have moved it but i have seen it and its purely accidental xxxxx

I have litter trays with hay in in the hope of keeping the hay off the fleece. never works though rolleyes:)) After they have pulled big clumps across the cage, tossed it in the air and trampled it into the fleece I may as well not bother :))
