Hi. hoping some of you experienced piggy owners can help me. I am using Carefresh natural bedding in outdoor hutch with newspaper underneath. It lasted less than 48 hours before the Carefresh in the most used toilet area sodden and the newspaper underneath completely sodden and stinky so after only a couple of day have had to do a complete clean out. This defeats the object of a super absorbent bedding like carefresh. Is the carefresh supposed to absorb the wetness over time and will dry out. This would be fine but the paper underneath will remain wet and then start to smell so again pointless using the carefresh. Should I not be putting newspaper underneath? I also have Lino lining the floor. Would the carefresh work better straight on the Lino or would the same thing happen as with newspaper? Thanks in advance for any tips.

I would put the carefresh straight on the lino - and remove wet patches once or twice a day.

Carefresh is quite pricey . Have you considered other beddings? I like to use a bedding called Aubiose which I get on a 20kg bale form an equine supplier .

It is quite spikey - but I find it works well in hay trays .

there is info about different buddings on this thread

Thanks. Is audio use suitable for whole hutch? I am considering Fitch as seems it is just as good as Carefresh but a lot cheaper.

I started using carefresh when I first had my pigs but found I was spending so much money on it. I found megazorb to be cheaper, more absorbent and less stinky when put on top of newspaper, then I just cleaned the smelly bits once a day. You can buy it from equine stores and bulk farm food places- or amazon!

I used to use Megazorb in my bunnies littertray and also found it to be much more absorbent than Carefresh as it is made of smaller particles.

I use hemp bedding (hemparade from zooplus) and hay in my guinea pigs' litter trays. Works really well. No newspaper as it just gets soggy and smelly (as you have discovered).

Lining the hutch with lino is a good move. Must get some for my c and c indoor cage.
