Hello. Recently my 4 year old male guinea pig has been having misshapen poops. Sometimes they are weird, like 2 poops together, tear shaped poops, or wet poops. He also from time to time will chatter while pooping.

His under area is also becoming very wet and smelly. I clean his cage regularly and he isn't sitting around more then usual, or so Ive seen.

But he is still eating, drinking, and coming up to the cage when he hears me. Not sure whats going on

I hope you guys can help

Hello and welcome. The misshapen poo may be down to a mild tummy upset. Take him off all fresh veg until 48 hours after his poos return to normal.

With regards chattering while pooping, is it he is squeaking or wheeking? I would get him checked out given he is constantly wet underneath.

In the meantime you can give his bottom a wipe down with a wet cloth, just to help keep him clean.

He is just chattering when pooping.

But to clarify, you said take him off of fresh veggies after his poops turn back to normal? How do I get them back to normal?

Never mind I misread it!

But he is only chattering while pooping

Would there be any reason for his genitals being dirty? I gave him a bath only a month ago.

Here is a photo of his underside

Right after the photo I watered it down and wiped away what I could

Please have him seen by a vet. Being wet and dirty underneath can signify a urinary problem which may need treating.

Switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh him daily so you can more closely monitor his hay intake. Often poorly piggies will reduce their hay intake and given you can’t judge hay intake by eye, it is important to increase the weight checks so you can see enough hay is being eaten. You should step in with syringe feeding if hay intake and consequently weight is reducing.

Removing veg from his diet until poops return to normal - having veg into the diet where there is a digestive upset can upset it more. Something goes wrong in the digestion and they need a higher fibre/hay intake to help settle the gut. For a minor upset a few days off veg is often enough to resolve the issue. You can give some probiotics alongside to help. After a few days the poops should start to normalise. 24 hours after they have normalised you can slowly start to add some veg back in - something like a sprig or two of cilantro for a few days, then add in a piece of lettuce as well for example, always watching to ensure poops don’t go mushy again. If all remains well, increase veg back to the normal amount.

if poops don’t normalise within a few days then you will need to take piggy to the vet but as I say in this case I would go anyway
