Hi there, I’m hoping someone can help. One of my piggies has a wet patch on his face. It’s above his mouth, he’s eye and nose seem dry. He’s eating fine and doesn’t seem in pain at all. I can’t see anything obvious that could be causing it. When I first noticed I thought it was just from his water bottle but it’s there all the time. I’ve tried cleaning it up but it just comes back. It’s a clear fluid. 9295F02D-6AF7-42CE-B683-BEF7C508C388.webp58B5661A-E8A4-4987-B719-B4608CE9DB84.webp
Can anyone help? My vet is only doing emergency appointments

Is it wet to touch?
Does the fur feel stiff? I’m just wondering whether maybe it’s boar glue?
A while ago it felt a bit stiff but then today it’s really wet. I’ve never heard of boar glue. I’ll look it up, thanks

Ah! I get it now! No I don’t think it is that. It’s always in the same place and feels wet today

Hi!

Have you watched how he is drinking from his bottle? It can be anything from some water gone astray when he was bumping the nozzle to being target peed at by a companion. In these cases, your boy should clean it off by himself.

If is coming off the eye (watery tear fluid), then this is pointing at an irritation or potential non-ulcerating hay poke or a beginning conjunctivitis. Please have your boy seen by your vet if continues, if he squints repeatedly, if the eye is drawn in (a sign of pain) or definitely asap as soon as you see a gunky whiteish/bluish film developing on the surface of the eye (ulceration is a sign of an eye infection).

Thank you for your advice. At first I thought it was water but then it’s always in the same place and doesn’t seem to dry up. The eye looks dry, and there’s no discharge from the nose and it’s not dribble from the mouth because it’s above his mouth

Have you watched him drinking? Guinea pigs can have very ideosyncratic ways of drinking and some are decidedly messier than others; especially if it is a regular thing and not a one off.

If the eye is not affected, then it is in any case not something you need to worry about.

I’ve not really watched him closely. I’ll see if I can catch him drinking today!
