My girls sometimes make a deep sort of rumbling noise. They don't seem to be in pain or upset, I don't know whats wrong. It is almost like they are purring. I am not that worried because they don't seem to be in discomfort, but does anybody know what they are trying to say?

If they do it to each other then they are in heat. This is what girls do every sixteen days or so. It is perfectly normal.

They are saying 'it's that time of the month'!.

What is their body language like? Always important to check that as well as a few sounds can mean different things with or without body language.

  • If they make their bodies longer and begin to sway side to side whilst walking around each other, it's because they're in season or they're sorting dominance out, or could be both.
  • If they are sat still, not moving at all, it's a concerned type of sound, made when they hear a sudden strange noise etc, they're basically asking 'what was that?'.

Hope that's helped :)

Rumbling can also be a dominance thing too, my domimant girl rumbles almost like you'd expect a boar to (to let everyone know who's boss), and the other girls give little rumbles back in reply to her.

They may even rumble at noises they are unsure of; phone ringing, unusual banging, that sort of thing; they tend to rumble together when that's the case!

There are a few reasons why they rumble, but it's a perfectly normal noise to hear; even from girls! :)

Thanks. It might have been the phone, or my mum clanking pots and pans. Their cage is in the kitchen, so they are used to all the sound. They also used to live in a noisy house before they came to the shelter.:)

I was going to post a new thread on this as Lacey made that noise last night, well at 4am actually and it woke me, she sleeps in the next room (I'm in a flat) and my door was open. I found her in her usual spot under the wardrobe and making a deep sort of grumbling noise, bless her, I didnt know they had a 'time of the month' either so good to know, thank you, at least I know she isnt in pain as its the first time she had made that noise, the rustling of the kale bag from the fridge soon had her popcorning though lol :))
