Hello everyone. We are getting 2 baby Guinea pigs in a couple of weeks. They will be 7 weeks old when they arrive. We have a Wendy house which once they are bigger we would like to have a setup where they have a large hidey house for sleeping in and the run of the playhouse. The lady we are getting them from suggested that initially while they are still small this might not be a good idea as they may be scared by the large space and hide making it hard for us to interact with them. So suggested a hutch in the playhouse to start.
the dilema I have is that is if we get a recommended 4 x 2 hutch it will need to along the back wall of the play house and take over a lot of the space and make it cramped for us going in there. I was think of getting a smaller one about 3ft so it can go along side wall and then that will give a good space. What are opinions on this as it will only be while they are small and then they will have the run of the playhouse later. Another idea I thought of was to just get a decent size hutch for the garden for the summer and then move into Wendy house in the winter when they are bigger. Obviously this would be costly as will need to get new sleeping house for the winter. Thanks.

hmm yes i see your problem, ive got a few points which i hope help , but I'm too tired at the moment to form paragraphs so here they are:
  • your piggies will adapt to you/ their home best if they are indoors where they get much tamer quicker
  • inside would be easier to keep an eye on them and they wont have to cope with the temperature when they are younger
  • its best not to handle you guinea pigs to begin with-let them come to you for food
  • younger guinea pigs are more active so therefore need more space
  • in my opinion a 3 foot hutch and access to the play house is best
  • a three foot hutch by its self would probably only be suitable for the first 3 days until they start exploring
  • minimum hutch size by blue cross is 120x50 for one guinea pig
i understand if inside is not a possibility but i thought id put it out there.
i can give you some more points on the summer/ winter thing if you could tell me:
  • what size playhouse is it?
  • whats the playhouse made from?
  • is it well ventilated?
sorry i cant be more litterate hope this helps x

Can they have a hutch which is always open so that they have a nice cosy space to go to but also plenty of space?

My rabbits have a doorless hutch in their shed. They like to sit on it!

Enjoy your new sweeties. They are such deloghtful creatures.
