I've gone and worried myself...so, as you may know, we have an enormous cage. And an enormous cage means enormous fleece. The fleece in the run is over, erm, two metres long and a metre wide? So it's a huge faff to clean, especially as mum won't put it in the washing machine, and it holds so much water it practically flooding the tumble dryer.
Anyway!
Therefore, the big fleece only gets washed every other week? Every couple of weeks maybe? And she can wash the smaller C&C cage fleece more often, but I really see how she struggles to handwash the mighty purple fleece. Anyway, will it harm the boys? We keep it well-swept!

Are the pigs on it constantly? If so then it probably needs changing more often as it'll smell and pigs noses are very close to the ground so it'll be more stinky for them.

Is there a reason why your mum won't put it in the washer? I use a horse laundry bag (from Amazon) to wash my fleece in and it keeps all of the hay and hair in the bag so it doesn't block the pipes in the washer.

Or could you buy another big fleece? I have a few so if I'm feeling lazy and don't wash it straight after taking it out of the cage I have another one to use.

You could get several smaller fleeces to come together to make said giant fleece. Does it have to be one complete piece? Might make things a bit easier on the washing machine as it won't be big and heavy :)

Buying a new fleece is an excellent idea...and I've told her about the horse wash bag, but she isn't convinced *sigh*
Yes they are pretty much on it all the time:hmm:

Is she worried that the hay and hair will clog up the washer?

Next time I do a wash with my horse bag thingy I'll try to remember to take a photo. I'll shake the bag out onto the floor once the fleeces are washed so you can see the hay and hair that is in there. The hay and hair really does stay in the bag and doesn't escape into the washer.

Could you cut the large piece into smaller, more manageable pieces? I wash mine in an old duvet cover with a knot tied at the top (the first time I just did up the poppers which didn't work at all as everything fell out!)...that seems to work well and I just shake everything outside once it comes out of the machine :)

I also use a bag thing to wash my fleece, super cheap on Amazon and it's a nice big bag with a zip. My mum was dubious about it too but it's fantastic, doesn't let any hair, hay or other nasties into the washing machine :)

Amazon Horse wash bags are a must lol... I have just washed my big floor fleece ... i have similar problems with putting a big load of fleece in the washer and it floods ... it did it on Sunday ... i use lots to smaller fleeces in the c&c and wash the large one underneath once a week... the floor one gets washed / changed about every 2 weeks.. Good luck !

Definitely! I'm trying to remember a time I wasn't washing fleece though, I still need to do my own clothes but my days off seem to be over ruled by the herd :))

with two kids - my washer is on constantly ! The piggy bedding goes in at night to come on about 4am so i can get it dry the next day ! did a load yesterday and just changed the cage again cos it was a bit smelly.....

It never ends does it? XD

So, this fleece is enormous. I posted a photo of it...let me see...https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/attachments/img_0068-jpg.55936/
So you guys think the amount we wash it is bad for the pigs? And I really, really must convince her to get a wash bag! Will it work on something so huge, though...? Cutting it up seems hugely, hugely impossible. You'd need a chainsaw, it seems. Or Wolverine.
