Hi,
This morning I noticed a weird patch/spot above one of my guinea pigs eye. He has a vet appointment in a hour, but I was just wondering if anybody had any idea as to what is going on.

Hi

Could you please tell us how long you have had your guinea pig and what kind of place it has come from? It will influence our guesses.

Please be aware that we cannot diagnose just from a picture without a hands-on examination and none of us is a trained vet.

We have had Sunny for a year and a half, he was a rescue. Also, the spot came on somewhat suddenly, and everything else has been normal.

Is it crusty or just bare? It is not quite clear from your picture.

I think it is mostly bare.

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to say whether it could be the very start of a (fungal) ringworm outbreak, which is typical for this location and will develop into a larger round, crusty area around the eye over the coming days (see the pictures in the ringworm guide link). It would be my first guess but it is not yet developed enough to be sure.
Ringworm: Hygiene, Care And Pictures

The location is rather untypical for either of the two guinea pig specific mites, which are usually on the rump and it is as yet impossible to tell whether it could be some kind of mechanical abrasion.

Good luck at the vets. What did they say it was? Hope it’s something easily treatable.

@weepweeps Fortunately, the vet doesn’t think it will be too serious. It is either ringworm or alopecia from trauma. They have been chewing on the chloroplast lately(we have tried everything to get them to stop), and it is very possibly that he could of cut his eye on that. They also found a patch on his nose, and they are plucking hair from where the fungal spores would be and running tests on it. As it is not severe at the moment the vet doesn’t want to start him on medicine unless it gets worse, or they receive confirmation from the lab that it is ringworm. In that scenario we will have to start him on oral meds because of how close it is to the eye. I really hope that his brother doesn’t come down with ringworm too.m

All the tests have come back, and fortunately after a very expensive vet bill they have decided Sunny doesn’t have any medical issues. The mark was alopecia due to blunt trauma, and it will heal eventually.
