So each Sunday is cage cleaning/health check/oil rub day for my girls, and I was wondering; how much shed skin is too much shed skin? I don’t scrub at all, just gently move the paper towel across their bodies, but one of my girls consistently has more skin flakes than the other two. Is it just a body quirk or something to possibly worry about?

Picture attached— shedder is the black stained towel.

Hi.

Skinny pigs shouldn't need weekly oiling.

Luna is the skinny pig in my picture. Her previous owner use to moisturise her. She didn't need it. Luna had dry skin but it was triggered by incorrect humidity and occasionally dusty hay. So I misted her room with a spray bottle when we had dry days or the heating on and she was fine after that. Previously her skin was very scuffed up.

I'd leave them be and see what their skin turns out like and work from there.

Thank you for the advice! The girls will definitely be happy about that. I’ll have to go get a new spray bottle for them just in case then.

Yeah. Mine would not enjoy a body oiling every week. Face touching fine. Anywhere else is angry rumbles ahaha.

Don't spray the pigs just lightly mist the air once or twice a day.

I have had skinny pigs for the past 5 years (i currently have 4) and have never needed to oil them. One of my skinnies does get the occasional bath but this is because she has an overactive grease gland and her skin gets very oily and this causes the dust from the hay to stick to her. This can then block the pores in her skin which could cause problems.

Nova was always greasier. Not too greasy but enough that she's actually really clean. Luna was always a bit trampy, use to sleep and wee where she napped, she was a pale pink pig so you can imagine how she sometimes looked! 🤢
