Hello everyone, I’m very stressed because my new guenia pig has been making weird noises specifically at night time. The first day I got him he made a sound I can’t quite describe more like a chew toy when you squeeze it but deeper or even an owl hooting. Yesterday and today he kept making that sound and then made a sudden gagging sound or a cough I’m not sure but it kind of stops after that. It does not last that long maybe a few minutes or so and since I’m waiting until my new job starts soon and unfortunately cannot afford the vet as of now and it is sad because I got him for my guenia pig but he is still getting used to us as mine keeps humping him and sort of looks annoyed by him too when he keeps dominating him which I try to stop when it gets too much. I’m not sure if he just doesn’t feel comfortable yet and he makes those noises because it sounded a bit like whining too I just hope to get him to the vet as soon as I can as I know conditions like these can be life threatening and I did not expect this to happen right before I started to work in a few days.

Audible breathing coming from the nose may be due to hay dust irritation and can often be cleared with a sneeze. This kind of nasal irritation is usually temporary, lasting just a few hours but given piggy is new and may have brought an illness in with him then he does need to see a vet.

Whereas clicking, crackling, wheeziness from the chest or any visible effort when breathing always requires a prompt vet check.

It would be wise to ensure you weigh him daily so you can monitor hay intake more closely (switching back to routine weekly weight checks once he is well).

Emergency and Crisis Care as well as Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

I hope he is ok

Thank you so much, at first it was once a day and currently he’s been at it almost the whole night and I’m getting worried he sounds worse and it might be a respiratory infection:(
