I heard a wierd noise and looked into my younger guinea pigs cage and Arthur was there making a wierd movement, sort of like he was trying to throw up but not quite. He was moving his body forward but not moving and it was sort of like lunging.

What was he doing? Was he trying to cough or? Did he have something stuck in his throat? I can't figure out what it was. I've seen him do it once before a while back, too.

Piggies do cough but I am not sure about the movement.

Does he do the movement a number of time? Is there any noise?

Yeah its a few times. I would imagine something between 5-10x he did it. He's fine now but it got me curious. I gave him a little guy after and he seemed fine.

I can't quite remember the sound enough to describe it. I was too worried about him.

Rodney did that and the first time I saw it I thought he was having a fit! I was so scared.

If its what I think it is, they are clearing their throats.....if they eat too quickly it sometimes gets stuck in their throat, so they do this weird thing where it looks like they are trying to be sick....

Was it that?

If so then dont worry, its nothing serious but if he does it a lot and more regularly might be an idea to take to the vet just for a quick check

Yeah it did sort of look like he was trying to force himself to be sick (like how a human would do it.)

I've only seen him do it twice, counting today. I'm glad its nothing too serious. He does eat quite fast.

Bruce used to that & after a trip to the vets, it was discovered it was heaving hiccups due to him eating to much!
We had to keep him on a permanent diet because he'd literally just eat & eat haha!
So it was nothing to worry about in Bruce's case.

I noticed my Dougal doing this, and it was usually after eating quickly. I think its just a hiccup, or clearing throat thing. It looks scary though doesnt it?!

Thanks for this thread. This has put my mind at rest! I was about to go to A&E vets style! Always worth checking old posts!

Geoffery my youngest boar also did this last week. He was lunging forwards as if he was trying to be sick, but obviously GPs cant be sick. He was also coughing too which went on for some time. This really concerned me so I rang the vet immediately and went straight there for him to be looked at.

It transpired that he had had a bit of hay stuck in his throat, but fortunately, it came free of its own accord. i dread to think what could have happened if i had not witnessed this :-(

But it did scare me.
