Weight

There’s no set weight. It’s about individual heft and how well they gain weight

No. I'm not concerned about them, I just wanted to know how much they should weigh.
Thanks

How much do your boys weigh?

Last time I weighed them (a couple weeks ago) they weighed around 200g. Is that a healthy weight?

When you weigh it needs to be precise and not ‘around’. Can you weigh them now and tell us exactly how much they weigh? And you then need to weigh them every week (at the same time) thereafter

What age were they when you got them? If you haven’t weighed them for a couple of weeks and they are 8 weeks old.....

An 6 week old piggy wouldn’t be 200g - that is incredibly tiny.

They were 5 weeks old then, it wasn't precisely 2 weeks ago.
And I'll weigh them a later and get back to see if that is an adequate weight.

If they were 4 weeks old when you got them
They are 8 weeks old now

is that correct?

Please do weigh them again. Weighing needs to be done every week, particularly for youngsters.
If they weighed around 200g about two weeks ago, then I would be concerned about them as that is a very low weight for piggies of that age, and would be switching to weighing them daily to ensure their weight is definitely going up

Yes. They are 8 weeks now and last time I weighed them they were 4 weeks old. I will weigh them and get back to you to see if their weight has gone up, just not now.

What were the actual weights when you last checked them? You should ideally have an ongoing list of the exact weights for all three of them.

Please ensure you weigh them every week. A four week gap between weighing such young ones is not a good idea. Regular (weekly) weighing allows you to spot health concerns much more quickly - sometimes a change in weight is the earliest symptom of a problem starting - and step in as necessary.

Where did you get them from?
Why did you weigh them four weeks ago yet haven’t weighed them again since?

One of my guinea pigs is currently exactly 8 weeks old and he weighs 471g and is definitely not fat or anything.

I've just looked at my old records and at 8 weeks old the other male pigs I've had at that age (most have been acquired at older ages) were 344g (he was thought to be 8 weeks but I feel he may have been younger as he was very small), 456g and 409g (those were definitely 8 weeks at point of weighing). They all gained about 50-70g a week at that point, sometimes gaining about 30g. By 9 weeks old those 3 weighed 404g, 522g, and 458g... in my experience they grow very rapidly at this age.

I know it can vary a lot. The two who were 456g and 409g at 8 weeks are biological brothers... they are now 6 months old and one is 915g and the other 1024g... he's going to be big!

I got them from a farm and I didn't know it was so important to weigh them frequently until now.

Boar pups aren’t usually removed from their mother until 250g weight. Those weights you’ve given are very small indeed to have been removed from their mother. Where did you get them from? And how old were they?
Please weigh as a minimum once per week at the same time each time. Your pups should be gaining a healthy amount of weight each week until full grown.

Oops I meant 1064g!

With babies you don’t need to do anything except feed them a healthy diet of hay pellets and veggies. We have given you all the links in other threads. They will gain weight weekly as they grow - bones are heavy!

The scale you are using may also influence the accuracy of their weights.
Their current weight is worryingly light for their age.
Are you using a kitchen scale or a bathroom scale?

They need to be weighed on a kitchen scale that is for weights up to a couple of kilos, not a human bathroom scale which simply doesn't have the accuracy.

I'm using a kitchen scale. (pretty old kitchen scale)
I weighed them again, they are 8 weeks
piggy #1 321g
piggy#2 392g
piggy#3 436g

If you use the same scales and weigh them at the same time each week you will be able to keep a regular track of their weights. That’s how we identify if an adult pig may be hiding an illness (as they may lose weight over a week or so).

They sound a little on the light side to me but may just be littler ones than mine. I'd say as long as they have constant access to hay, and get the veg and pellets they need and are eating well and gaining weight then you shouldn't need to worry, but maybe see a vet if you are worried. 😊

I was looking back through my guinea pig weight charts and one of my boys who I rescued at a year old was 616g when we got him (another boar who was exactly the same age as him was 1299g at the time) but the little one did get to a normal weight eventually.

They do vary massively in size though- with the adult boars I currently have, the smallest is exactly 1kg, the largest was 1.5kg in his prime although is a little under that now as he's a bit of an old man now, just to give you an idea of the huge size differences there can be.

Hope that helps 😊
