Hi

I've had my baby piggies Bert and Earnie both male from same litter.
Just a little worried about Earnie as he is soo much smaller than Bert.
They are both healthy, eating, poopin, weein, talking.
We weighed them both tonight;

Approx 10 weeks.
Earnie is 318g
Bert 477g

They have Timothy hay and normal hay fresh veg/fruit/herbs daily and pellets.
They love there lap time and play time and get this a good hour everyday.

Is Earnie an ok weight as he feels a little boney?
I even have him out of the cage on his own and encourage him to eat as Bert can be a bit mean and pinch carrot off him!

I've checked his bum/teeth/nails they are fine and they have beautiful shiny coats.

Would appreciate any advice.

Thanks x

Hi, I asked this question a week or so ago as I have 2 piggies that are 10 weeks old tomorrow.

The answer that I got was that they should be putting on between 1 and 1.5 ounces per week. I was also advised that the average weight when born was 3 ounces therefore by outting on 1 ounce per week since birth, they would weigh 13 ounces (368 grams) and putting on 1.5 ounces per week they would weigh 18ounces (510 grams).

I am by no means a guinea pig expert and there are loads of people on here that will be able to help you but this is some info that i obtained from this forum.

Hope this helps.

Claire x

318g sounds light for 10 weeks to me, the babies I've had here are normally that weight by 4-6 weeks. Were they a similar size when you got them, or has one always been smaller?

Weight can be deceptive as two pigs from the same litter might be very different sizes, but if you're looking at his condition / shape and he looks 'boney' or you can see hips etc. then I'd say something is not right and he might need to be looked at. Try putting two food bowls in, as with boars sometimes one can hog all the food and push the other away! It might be worth getting his teeth checked too

Thanks Sophie,

Everything seems fine with him he's chirpy and eating will try putting another bowl in as Bert is and has always been the biggest one and pinches food off Earnie!
His teeth seem fine he's always eating expecially hay all the time and he uses his knaw stick. He doesn't seem ill at all he's just small compered to Bert.

Going to take the to vets for a check up tommorow at 5pm.
There charging £10 each so nowere near as much as i thought.
How are you sure that they are experts with pigs other than asking them?

Big pigs, small pigs, weight is within limits, don't worry, I would keep him away from the vet!

Worried though he's a boney can feel his ribs and spine etc so just going for a check up.
Taking his brother along to so they can see the difference.

by reading your post I'm a bit worried bout my guinea pig too , shes just turned 13 weeks and is only 350g does ht mean shes very underweight then ? but like yours she has been eating and looks healthy ?

Be careful that the vet doesn't start treating a (hopefully) healthy pig just because you are concerned about the weight

I got my little Nina, who was stuck at 63g for days, to fatten up and put weight on now by giving her a little bowl of porridge. Made with pure oats and full fat goats milk in a pan in the normal way, and kept in the fridge. Just leave in cage at room temp, and she nibbled on it often. I changed it 2 - 3 time a day It really did the trick, she is putting weight on like crazy now. xx

I'll let you know how i get on tommorow.
I've bought a seperate bowl for him and also bought some Sundried corn and porridge oats for him to eat as read someones advice that it will help to fatten him up, also giving him his normal pellets/hey/veg.

Trip to the Vets

Hi

Went to vets on Friday for check up and everything seems ok just that Earnie is a little underweight. So she surgested putting a box in with a hole just big enough for him and not for burt and hide food in there for him.
Weighed Earnie last night and was happy to see that he has gained 14g since the 27/08/09. So the box idea kinda works but needs changing everyday as Burt munches his way in! :{

Thanks everyone for advice x

I'm a little more relaxed now and Burt does seem to have calmed down allot so Earnie is getting chance to eat!
