Hi all :)p

As many of you know, Biscuit (my 5 1/2 month old boar) has been pretty ill recently. He first had a URI (nasal discharge) and was prescribe engemycin which he turned out to be allergic to. He was hospitalised 10 days ago for one day and was on gut stasis medication for a week or so.

He has recovered well as I'm sure you know and his droppings are getting back to their normal size and his appetite is back. My major concern now is this: on the Monday he was first diagnosed with a URI (20th Sept.) he weighed 830g. I weighed him for the first time since his illness today and he is 720g. This is a massive wieght loss I know. Is this normal given his recent illness and gut problems? Can anyone suggest a good way to get his wieght up safely and fairly quickly?

All advice gratefully received as ever :)

Hi there, how much does his friend weigh? Had you been syringe feeding him? This is the best way to get their weight up. Supplementary feeds on mashed up pellets (excel) with a 1ml syringe. There will be more advice on syringe feeding in the help pages i'm sure, or do a search for syringe feeding :)) x

Hi,

Caramel weighss just under 1kg now. On the 20th their weights were Biscuit = 830g and Caramel = 900g. So you can see how they've diverged. I did try to feed him with a syringe as we were given that recovery stuff from Supreme by the vet.

He really hated it and refused to eat much of. I'll try with mashed up pellets. As Isay, he's eating normally but he seems so small at the moment. I will wiegh him again in a couple of days and see if he's gaining. I didn't want to weigh him while he was ill last week but it may be that he has put weight on in the last few days and was even smaller before - I don't know.
