Hi everyone.

Long story short - fudge has osteodystrophy. His jaw bones are fusing together which has resulted in him not being able to chew.
This is his only symptom.

He’s fed through a syringe everyday with mushy pellets.
He’s very thin & his weight is low.
What foods can I blend up to help him gain weight?

thanks

@furryfriends (TEAS) for this.

Plain rolled oats are the best weight gainer I think but wait to check that is correct

May I also just add he can’t chew. Therefore anything he eats has to be mushed and blended so it can go through the syringe.

Hi!

I am ever so sorry. Osteodystrophy is one of the nastiest things a piggy can suffer and even worse because it is entirely down to human breeding. :(

Please be aware that pellets are comparatively low in hay/grass fibre, which is not only crucial for dental overgrowth but also for the digestive tract; that is why dental issues are often connected with longer term digestive problems.
If possible, use a timothy hay based recovery formula as the basis of your syringe feeding; you can still mix in some mushed pellets. The food proportions of ca. 80% hay/grass fibre as the mainstay of the diet and the rest (veg and pellets) replacing the role of the supplementary wild forage should still roughly kept.

Here are our tips for underweight piggies; you may want to juice things if your boy can't chew. A healthy piggy eats about the equivalent of 90-120 ml in 24 hours. That is much more than most people expect.

He has to have his teeth trimmed every 4 weeks.
He eats so much syringe food 😂. We usually sit there for an hour or so and he’s had at least 50ml in one sitting.

He’s not so keen on recovery food. He loves his mushy pellets. Is it a good idea to give him fibreplex everyday then?
