We have a 5.5 year old piggy who has been poorly this week. We have had 4 trips to the vet, the last two to an exotic specialist. He lost his appetite - eating only very small amounts of his favourite greens, becoming lethargic and removing himself to a corner away from his two (four month old female cage mates) (he is neutered).
At the exotic vet he had a scan and they found a very expanded stomach (vet said dgv like dogs can get). He stayed in for the days and came home with metacam, emeprid, cisapride, infacol and ranitidine. The next day he appeared to be feeling much better but then went downhill again so we went back to the vet. They did some blood tests which showed nothing significant, gave him more fluids and sent him home to continue the medication and feed with critical care as needed.
His medications are now on the last day. He seems to be much brighter, much more interested in food and is interacting with the other two. He is also going to the hay again which he was avoiding completely before.
However, we are weighing him every day and he is still losing weight - around 30g last two days. It is very difficult to get him to take the syringe feed, particularly today so we are struggling.
How quickly would you expect to see his weight stabilise and improve? Just surprised to see him much brighter and pretty much normal behaviour wise but not putting on weight. Can anyone advise? Thank you.
