Hallo!

Patches seems to have a constant weepy eye, just on one side. Occasionally you can see a milky fluid, but mostly just damp hair around his left eye. Months ago I took him to the vet and she said it was a calcium deficiny, gave him a jab and recommended I change his food to supa guinea pig, which he refused to eat. She said it should clear up, and he'd be happier eating too. Personally I had never thought that Patches' was in discomfort while he was eating, the way he gobbles down his veggies!

So I've changed him back to his tesco mix, giving him a sprig or two of parsley every day and have specfically been picking vit C water supplement with calcium in it.

Long story short - I was wondering if anything else could be going on in him? He's happy, healthy and alert, but this eye thing is confounding me! He can't be short on calcium, and I dont want to over feed him for obv. reasons with stones and things...

Any advice?

http://www.guinealynx.info/eyes.html#discharge Have a look here. They do produce a milky substance from the eye to clean themselves with. I am just wondering whether this is over active in the eye.

I would get a second opinion from a different vet. I've not heard of eye problems associated with calcium only joint problems and the inability to walk. :)

I agree with S&T. I've never heard of a calcium deficiency being linked to eyes, only vitamin c. I personally wouldn't put the vitamin c in his water bottle as you don't know how much of it he's drinking. You can buy chewable vitamin c which humans take. You could try giving him half a tablet for a week to see if there is any improvement.

She said that it would be the calcium def. leading to sore teeth, and when she did poke about at his jaw he squeaked like he was being murdered. He doesn't seem to squeak when I poke him there any more, so maybe it is just an over active cleaning lubrication.

Thanks for the info! I never knew that they produced it to clean. Do you think over activty in this could cause any problems?

PM Maryh love and ask her advice.
I agree the milky substance is when they clean themselves.... we also have weepy eyes with our little guy i bathe them 3 times a day and get rid of any crusty bits etc... the vets have done tests numbers of times but can't find anything...
Paws crossed that it's just an over active gland or something, sorry i'm no help, but we're sending heaps of wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeks of love

I wouldn't say the weepy eye is connected with a calcium deficiency unless there are other symptoms?

Guineas need a variety of fresh veg every single day as, like us humans, they cannot produce their own vitamin C. A few springs of parsley isnt enough I'm afraid :)

There is a veggie shopping list stickied at the top of the food section, have a look there. Mine get a bowl of veg morning and night and I have mine on Supa guinea excel. Tesco is supposed to be not too bad but pellet food is better as they cant feed selectively. To change from one to the other, mix the two at first, then gradually reduce the amount of the previous mix and more of the pellets until they are on the pellets. It worked with all of mine and took about 2 weeks :)

Vitamin C in water is a waste of time unless he drinks a whole bottle of water a day. Fresh veg is your best bet, introduce slowly if he hasnt been used to getting certain things as some can cause diahorrea or bloat if he isnt used to it, eg cabbage or greens etc..

My boys get a wide variety of fresh veg every day - I'm feeding them the parsley to help with their calcium intake. The vit C in the water is a once a week thing - the water gets left until they drink it all, (and normally it really only is half a bottle that they get, so it does tend to go in one day.)

And I've tried the Supa Guinea pig stuff, they hated it and just didn't end up eating it. They really eat with relish their Tesco mix, and they eat every part of it enthustically so I don't have to worry about selective feeding - thankfully!

I'm not so worried about their Vit C intake, which I know is just fine. It's their calcium I was more worried about due to this weepy eye thing. I'm now thinking it to be an overactive gland as a few folk have suggested here - as his jaw isn't sore anymore like the vet said when we got him checked out a few months ago. So you're right, it's probably not a def. as there's no other symptoms. I was just wondering why it hasn't gone away - if he wasn't getting enough calcium surely my other lad owuld be displaying the same symptoms! And he's fine.

My little piggy Robbie sometimes has a drop of milky substance under his eye very occasionally, I always wondered what it was but didn't worry because he is always so happy. My piggies get veg etc. 3 times a day so I don't think he has a calcium deficiency or vit c. I am glad reading this has helped clear it up for me. Thanks.

Apparently pigs secrete a milky substance from their eyes to clean themselves with via their front feet.

If the eye is watering and then left crusty then it is worth getting another vet's opinion.

Joey, my 5 year old, has constantly weeping and crusty eyes. It isn't caused by infection apparently, but I have to bathe his eyes every day.

If you bathe your pig's eye, please make sure that you don't bathe the other with the same cottonwool ball, just in case you transfer whatever it is to the other eye.

Let us know what happens!
