Hi all, I put some pet friendly weed and feed on my grass, but just want to check does pet friendly also apply to guinea pigs? In regards to if they are eating the grass or does the pet friendly just apply to cats and dogs etc. I put it down about 5 days ago however it has not rained so it still may be scattered about, thanks

We didn't let our dog out on the grass after treating our lawn until it had rained. I would wait for it to rain and then leave it long enough for the grass to be cut 2-3 times before putting piggies on it. I would assume pet friendly applies to larger animals walking on it rather than small animals eating it

Thank you that's really helpful

I don't have dogs I was just trying to ask if pet friendly applies to guinea pigs who eat the grass as opposed to just walking on it like a cat or dog

Please still take the time to read the advice in the link in the last post. You will need to accustom any indoors piggies to grass slowly anyway and also gradually harden them off. With the current still very cold nights in the UK, the ground is not yet warm enough to put your piggies out for long. The guide gives you advice on how to check whether conditions are right and how you can protect your piggies from illnesses relating to to a cold damp ground.

Pet friendly is not necessarily geared towards eating loads; the grass and grass seed are still treated with chemicals, just not the heavy guns. You will still have to let the chemicals grow out before you can put guinea pigs or rabbits out on it.

When we used to "weed and feed" at our old house, we mowed it 3 or 4 times before we let the piggies anywhere near it. Then I'd introduce my piggies to the grass for 15 mins for the first couple of days, slowly increasing it by 15 minute intervals until they were on it all day. They don't go outside now as there are foxes that live on the Heath which is very close to my house. The foxes walk down the road at night and into the back garden. I like it that my piggies are nice and safe in the garage.

Hi they are already accustomed to being on grass they are indoor but have had a run round on the grass many times. Piggies should be at a temp of no less than 15 degrees so I would never put them out in weather colder than that, and it's only for a few hours with my supervision as they enjoy it. My question was just regarding if 'pet safe' weed and feed is actually safe for all pets

Thank you so much that is really helpful, yes I also have to be mindful of potential predators as there are a couple of hawks that circle this area x

As they wouldn’t have been out for many months due to it being winter, then you must reaccustom them to grass all over again by building it up slowly 10/15 minutes at a time over a few weeks - it needs to be done slowly every spring or after any break from grass

Thanks, yes I'm aware of that, I was just enquiring as to people's perception on pet friendly weed and feed
