Last night I went to try on wedding gowns

I nearly fell over when the "stylist" advised that the cheapest dress was £2200 :o

Then she told me that I had until the end of the month to decide as they need 6 months to make it!

OMG! they have seriously gone up in price since I got married. :o

I must admit I 'hired' my dress for our big day. I just couldnt afford to spend loads of money on a dress that would only be worn for one day. It was a lovely dress too. Cant remember how much it cost now, but it was a fraction of what buying one then was.

It was fantastic trying them on, had great fun.. :)

My friend sold her wedding dress that she bought for £1400 on ebay & only got £200 for it. It was the most stunning dress too. Might be worth finding a good tailor & buying 2nd hand & having it made to fit. I would have had my friends in a shot - I'm not the marrying kind though!

That's a ridiculous amount for a wedding dress. Mine cost £750 5 years ago and that was completely hand made from a design that I had drawn. Also I'm kinda larger than your average bear and the amount of material used could have clothed a medium sized African nation ;D

I would shop around if I were you. :)

Thanks all - I'm going to look on the high street

I think i read somewhere that M&S are doing wedding gowns this year?

Deb - how long in advance did you have to arrange the hire?

I wish I could have hired one. My lovely dress has been bundled up in a bag for the last 5 years. I want to sell it but I can't afford to have it cleaned.
As for my Rigby & Peller basque. Bleedin' waste of money that was. Steve didn't even see it ::)

Wowsers

Id love to go to R&P for my undies for the big day

Oh it was lovely there and they're not that expensive considering. My basque was £75. When you consider it needed more iron and support than the Humber Bridge, I reckon that was bargainous.
You get 1 to 1 service and plush seats to sit on while waiting. I would def recommend it. :)

My friend got a ball gown/wedding dress for £90 from John Lewis. She looked a million dollars. Was floor length & white - not sure what sort of white though! it was kind of a floaty number.

Hmm

Thanks for that

Its a 4pm civil service followed by a BBQ so a nice evening dress could work

OOh I cant remember how long in advance I arranged to hire a dress, its been such a long time now. I dont think it was too long though, because we decided to get married in November and then got hitched in June..which isnt long these days really.

The thing that appealed to me about hiring was I could have a much nicer dress hired than I could afford to buy.

The whole wedding thing cost loads anyway, and didnt have the spare cash to buy a dress, so hiring was the solution.

Hubby, best man and my brother hired all their zoot suits too. Looked very nice. :)

Hey you could both buy my dress. There'll be enough material to make both your dresses and enough left over for the bridesmaids ;D

Yes it was. It's a lovely blue but if you want a white wedding its not the best choice ;D ;D

I'm not sure if this will help you but certain oxfam shops have bridal departments in them and i have heard you can pick up new dresses for cheap aswell as helping a charity :) I'm gonna look into this when i get married :)

My Mum took mine to our little local dry cleaners and they charged us for a skirt & a top (it was one with a separate bodice), it came to about £12!

Mine was a sample, I got it in the bridal shop sale for £450 instead of £750. I keep wondering of I should sell it before it looks too dated but can't bring myself too, no idea why, it's just sitting doing nothing.

Debenhams do wedding dresses too.

when I was living in Bristol well just outside, there was a Bridal shop on Chelteham road (sp) which was all as new I got a Rococo designer dress for £250 was over £1800 new and sold it again after privately for £500.00. ( I was so Jammie still makes me chuckle) that was my mistake of a marriage
not sure where you live but I am sure there are more shops like this up and down the country

when I married the love of my life I got married in a 3 piece, long satin skirt, velvet bodice and Velvet Jacket this was a registry office wedding and was Purple and gold and I felt so much more comfy and it was less than £150 came from Evans and have used it separately since for other occasions

my dress back in 79 was made up from me choosing what neck line style sleeves bodice train etc from books and mums friend was a dress maker she did it exactly how i wanted it, veil included, and charged me £20 I brought the material from Romford Market and still have it in the loft, my veil has been used 3 times as well for family , and the wonderful lady Pams son died 3 weeks before our wedding but she managed to finish off the dress bless her Ian her son was at school with me and died in a freak accident when the crane he was in toppled over, our wedding was the first time the family went out,

Nice catch pumpkin!

my daughter in law got her wedding dress from ebay and it came from Hong Kong and only cost her £85 it was gorgeous, brand new and stunning

My wedding dress was my "something borrowed" from the 5 superstitions - it was a friend of my Mom's really expensive dress that fit perfectly. It seemed a waste to spend a fortune on something that would either sit in the wardrobe or get packed away in the loft and never get worn again! She was really pleased and proud that it was being worn again too :)
