Hello all... I would assume this would come under Behaviour :{

As some of you may have read, my Cinnamon littered 11 days ago. I had always planned that if there were any male pups, they would go into my 82c cage when they reached weaning age at about 21 days old.

Well... I was wondering, as all the babies are sows, I don't need to separate them right? I looked around and the only thing I could see was that males need to be separated. Nothing about the female babies... I just want to double, triple check everything. I want to make sure I have everything right as I've never had tiny pups like these before. The youngest pig I ever had before the babies was 6 weeks old.

I would assume they are fine to stay but, what I am wondering is this:
Will they continue to feed from Cinnamon if they stay or will she wean them completely by herself? Or would they need to be separated in order to be completely weaned from her. I intend all my pigs to live together once the babies are old enough. I just don't want Cinnamon to have to keep feeding them after they're meant to be weaned because I WAS meant to separate them after all :(

The thought came to me as Sooty-Pig's behaviour confused me a few days ago. Again, some may have read the thread I created about rescuing 2 pigs from someone who wanted to dump them on the RSPCA. They are 10 week old sisters, I called Sooty-Pig and Brandy-Snap.

Well, Cinnamon was (still is) in her maternity apartment with the pups and I was holding Sooty. Cinnamon started trying to climb the side of the cage to see her. I put Sooty in the cage with her and the babies and she started washing her. This is the bit that confused me: Sooty started trying to suckle from Cinnamon. Cinnamon didn't mind but does this mean she wasn't weaned properly or something? I thought it was sweet, like Cinnamon wanted to adopt her or something but it wouldn't have been fair to the babies to keep her in there.

Thank you all in advance :)-c

The reason why any males are removed from the litter is so there are no more accidents - in your case all your sow's babies are girls so this isn't a problem. When my sow had her litter (1 boy and 1 girl), i removed the boy and placed him in with dad and left her daughter in with her (mother is coming up to 12months old and daughter is just over 7months old).

I think they just grow out of the suckling stage - i cant remember what age daughter stopped feeding from mum but i'm guessing it wasn't too long after her son was removed (between 3-6wks)

I'm sure someone with more experience will be able to tell you more about the weaning age - but as for separating - unless you are re-homing the baby girls, they are absolutely fine to stay with mum
