I'm in need of some advice regarding weaning off emeprid.
I have one piggy that is on emeprid for suspected bowel disease as diagnosed by Simon. When Simon saw him last for something unrelated, he said BB was in perfect health - stomach included. We’ve been trying to wean off the emeprid as he has 0.8ml twice daily but as soon as we go to 0.6ml after a few days his tummy begins to rumble and we notice slight weight loss.
Then we have another piggy who was put on emeprid for bloat about a month ago. He’s been on 1ml twice a day. An X-ray showed that his bloat has completely cleared. As such, we’ve been trying to lower the emeprid dose to wean him off for the last few days. We changed to 0.5ml twice a day a couple of days ago and, like BB, after a few days we are hearing loud tummy rumbles.
I’m not really sure what to make of it and what these rumbles mean. If anyone has experience with weaning off emeprid, I’d be interested to know if this rumbly phase is normal? It seems odd for both piggies to get a rumbly stomach around 3 days after having the dose lowered. We are essentially going through one bottle of emeprid a month and have done since February (we had another piggy who passed who was on emeprid too) and it’s getting extremely expensive.
It seems like neither piggy needs the emeprid, but when I try to lower the dose their tummy rumbles and so I feel like I have to give them more emeprid so that they had their usual dose. I just don’t know what to do about it.
Any advice is appreciated!

Is there anything else apart from a rumble tummy that happens when you’re weaning them off? Have you spoken to Simon to see what he thinks?

No there’s nothing else but a loud, rumbly tummy. I try and wait it out, but after a few hours of hearing it I give them more emeprid.
I’ve thought about calling Simon about it if no one else here has experienced this before, I wasn’t sure if this was just a normal part of the process. It’s just strange that the same thing has happened to both piggies when I’ve lowered the dose.

My 5 year old sows tummy has rumbled for the last couple of years on and off. No issues, just rumbles, you get some humans that rumble loud and some don't. I don't worry about it unless she is bloated or stops eating. Call Simon and say its getting expensive and you need some advice. He really will be happy to talk to you or get someone there to talk to you.
BB had a bowel problem that almost cost him his life in February, but Simon did say he was in perfect health about a month ago. It’s just strange that he gets a rumbly tummy a few days after I lower the dose. I’m too scared to not then make up the emeprid dose just because we were about 2 days away from a euthanasia appointment when he picked up in Feb. Bless him.
Then Digby, he was on the emeprid because he went into GI stasis and had bloat. An X-ray cleared him of bloat at our local exotic vet about a week or two ago. But again, lowering the dose makes his tummy rumble after a few days. Then I’m scared the bloat is building back up! It would be easier if he had bloat that was easy to identify but it’s soft bloat so not as obvious to tell. So when it starts rumbling I get paranoid.

For both piggies, because of what’s gone on in the past, I’m too paranoid and worried to just ignore it. Rumbly tummy isn’t normal for either of them... it’s just strange and doesn’t seem like a coincidence but I don’t know. Maybe it’s a normal stage of the body adjusting to being without the gut stimulant?
I’ll definitely have a chat about it with Simon or Kim since no one here seems to have gone through this. It’s definitely strange that it happens to both pigs after a few days with a lower dose 🤔

I have a piggie whom kim has put on emperid 1ml twice aday.ive reduced it to once a day, now will just give it if I see any ballooning of harrys abdomen.the vets are happy for me to use my judgement, but I've had a lot of experience. I agree with the other posters ask for your vets guidance.Harry has to be reviewed every 3 months.i hope you get some advice.🙂

Hope you can wean them off Empride, I’d definitely seek advice from Simon or Kim. It may be a gradual procedure while their tummies adjust x
