Hi

I had so much good advice about our little bitey psycho piglet - thank you.

She is calming down a bit - we have been doing lots of whispering and (fingers crossed) she hasn't bitten anyone for a couple of weeks. Several towels have been savaged though. She has been seen popcorning and running round like a mad thing so she is having some happy moments and our other two have been more dominant - we are hoping tings are starting to settle (touch wood).

Something I have just noticed recently is that she is gnawing a lot - the wood of the hutch and the run and she tries to bite the ceramic food bowls too . Is this normal, part of the stress behaviour or may she have a problem with her teeth? We haven't pig that does this before. Any advice gratefully received.

Hmmm... they naturally chew to wear down their teeth, and some pigs are more 'mouthy' than others. Some of mine have barely chewed at all, whereas one of mine completely chewed up my baseboards and drywall and one of our current pigs has bitten us a few times because she likes to chew clothing (and doesn't know or care that there are people under the clothing!) I would just keep an eye on her weight and watch to see that she is chewing food normally- my pigs with dental issues have been unable or reluctant to chew even enough food to maintain weight and definitely didn't seek out additional things to chew. She may just be 'mouthy' in the sense that she likes to investigate things by chewing.

Thank you - 'mouthy' is a really description for her. She doesn't seem to have trouble eating and her weight is good so I guess we just have one that is going to chew a lot of things. I will have to make sure that she has enough around for that.

Aw... glad you are making good progress with her. I had a mouthy one who loved to destroy her cage items, and my slippers :) It is not unusual but you are right to keep an eye on things. :)

They get quite a lot of hay but really good idea about the chubes - I'll get some today - thank you
