After 10 months being our one and only love, we decided to get Hoppsan (14month old) a friend, we know it's pretty late, but hey, better late than never! :)

Meet Ojdå!

He's 6 month old and he has just arrived our home yesterday. We decided to put him in a cardboard box for a week before introducing them properly. We've read through all the posts at the top and have 2 questions:

1. Ojdå is still super shy(wouldn't move or eat when we are around), and we don't think he'll warm up to us in just couple of weeks, will there be serious consequents if we introduce them in a week time? Will he kick Hoppsan by accident if he's too startled? (I read that it's better to leave him alone for 2 weeks, but we don't think an extra week will make him much more confident...)

2. We've prepared a pretty big box for the boys to live in ( a transformed Billy bookshelf from IKEA), I've read that the bounding should be in a neutral space and then move the settled pair into a cage that's new to both piggies, and then they might need to settle again in the cage...Wouldn't it be easier if we let them meet in the new cage that smells nothing like them and has enough room for the bounding requirment?

Give Ojda as much time as he needs to settle, as long as he and Hoppsan have time to get to know each other and interact through bars beforehand. That will take some of the stress out of the equation.
Please be aware that the ages are somewhat against you if Ojda turns out to be dominant; he is currently in one of the most hormonal ages. Make sure that the new cage can be divided, so both boys can still interact and stimulate each other, but they have got their own territory if things don't go well. When bonding privately, it is most important that you always have got a plan B ready if the piggies don't gel.

In order to help settle Ojda down, you will find these threads here helpful (they are from our newbie section); his reaction is very common for a guinea pig in new surroundings:
