Ok, so in a couple of weeks, we will be making a C & C cage, we aren't sure on size yet or weather it will be double story or not, but..... I know, most of you use correx to make a base for the cage, i'd like to know where the best place to buy it is and roughly how much it is.

Secondly, other than correx, what other materials can you use to make a cage base, something with sides so that bedding doesn't get kicked out etc.

Any other help, tips, advice, would be great.

Never made a C & C before, just used the grids as a run, and i have never paid any attention to others posts on here either.

Thanks xx

i dont use double tiers for the simple reason my piggies are lazy!

i also dont use correx either. i have lino on the floor and build the cages on that. i dont use bedding as such only newspaper and hay so it doesnt really get kicxked out, and clean out days dustpan and brush and its clean again :)

i got my correx (when i first made a C&C) from teacrate packaging, its not the thickest but worked for what i wanted.

i found with correx you cut it to the shape of your cage, which is fine but i get bored and keep changing the cages around!
xx

Thanks, We dont have room to chop and change so when its made it will be staying like it ha ha! xx

i previously had a c&c and it had two layers, although the top was small, i used correx and i used megazorb and newspaper as bedding because the correx comes quite a way up the sizes and the megazorb isnt kicked out.

i also used cable ties to keep the grids together as a/ i simply love them and b/ i dont like the connectors!

ps/ there was a lady on here that did them ready made, that may give you an idea of costing?

i got the correx i used from the one stop plastic shop (i think that's the name) and i got it in blue. i made the back of it really high which stops anything going over the back, and the other sides i made 8inches high.

i used connectors and cable ties on the floor part. if i did it again i would probably use just cable ties as some of the grids don't snap into the connectors properly and then if you cable tie as well it seems to pull it out of shape.

Thanks everyone, i have a tub of cable ties and was planning on using them, the connectors are ok but i wouldn't trust them as a permanent set up.

So is correx not something you can pick up from B&Q or homebase then?

Until we get the grids home and have a play around we dont know what size its going to be or anything.

See, i have been reading and hearing about sign shops (have been watching C&C youtube video's) but......what.....is a sign shop? LOL. You can tell i am naturally a blonde can't you? xx

ha ha just a shop that makes signage! we had one round here called Johnsons Signs. Also, my dad works for the local council and once (before all the cuts and stuff) he used to get me old signs from there that had been used in car parks etc!

I use vinyl flooring for my C&C - it's much easier to work with than correx, and you can pick up cheap offcuts easily from carpet shops.

protection.co.uk

they sell 5mm proplex (non branded correx) for #11 a sheet and its so strong you dont even have to use grids. they sell 4,3,2 mm as well if you wanted cheaper stuff! delivery is 10 squids though but worth it!

my c cage is 6ft x 2ft with 1ft walls and its perfectly sturdy! and cost me nothing as the courier damaged the correx a bit (perfectly useable, looked like carpet does after having a heavy unit on it for a whiel, you know a bit flat?) in one area so the company refunded me! Didnt need a refund just told them that the courier had damaged it a bit but hey .. .good customer service!

Protec also rang me about 5 minutes after I made the order to confirm it and tell me when it would be delivered!

If I made my cage again I would probably try out lino instead of correx. It's not that there's anything wrong with it (got it from teacrate packaging), but the pigs have eaten great big chunks out of it and I can't see it lasting forever! It's a little bit flimsy, but is only 2mm thick...

I can easily lay my hands on lino from work, but i would want a bit around the edge to prevent bedding, poops etc being kicked out, and i am not sure how i could have lino up the sides if that makes sense?

you could create corners with lino if you cut in the right place and tape it up with duct tape to make it waterproof, but i reckon you will be best with good old correx

I've used correx and to stop the lads chewing it I bought some plastic poster hangers from Staples (they come in black or white & 2 lengths - £1.99 & £1.49). They slide onto the top edges before the corners are taped together and the piggies can't chew them as their little nashers slide off it! :)) It needs to be a two person job as they can be hard to slide on whilst keeping it level with the top of the correx and they work best with the thinner stuff but worth the effort.

i made my cc base out of cheap plywood and boards that frame it going up about 2 inches. then put legs on so it sits about a foot off the floor (one ruler) The grids are removable, which make for easy cleaning, I lined the inside with a scrap of vinyl from the flooring store around the corner. As my boards are to thin (had to stay in my budget) to nail or screw together I used liquid nails, a very strong glue.

I have been speaking with some sign shops regarding correx, i am looking to order enough so that there is a frame of 5" which should be more than enough to stop stuff being kicked out, but still low enough for them to be able to reach and chew the top..... if they chew it would it do them any harm? This was one of the concerns the suppliers had was them chewing it...

my boys chewed theres to destrcuction so I bougth them a ferplast 140, thats why I have made my walls 1ft high on my new correx cage ... my old girlies cannot be bothered to stand on their hind legs to even try to chew it ... not sure they even know how high the walls are tbh!

Ok bumping this.

Just remembered we have a sign shop next door to where i work lol mallethead, i hve spoken to them and can get a 4' x8' sheet of correx for £15.00 + vat - does this sound like a fair price? He has asked how strong i need it, i assume he means thickness, what would you all suggest?

xx

I went to a local flooring shop and got some offcuts of lino. Rather than me spending £40 on correx, I got lino for £30 and I got more of it for that price. I think it works really well because as you ben the sides up, it is rounded rather than at a 90 degree angle, so it is super easy to clean/wipe over.

If you get correx, 4mm thickness is best because the 2mm can be a bit flimsy.

I got this stuff to line the edge of the correx to stop any chewing:

My correx is white so it blends in really well - and you can get different thicknesses based on how thick your correx is too :)) I just Duct-taped it on (bought white tape to match) and looks v neat!

Also would recommend paying more for thicker correx - before I had 2mm stuff and it was flimsy and rubbish. Ended up binning it and now I have either 4 or 5 mm stuff from Proplex

My correx arrived today, I got three 8x4 ft pieces at 4mm for £30! The sheets are about £8 each and they do different colours (mines white) not sure on postage as I got my hubby to get his company carrier in to fetch it.

They're based in hull, I haven't actually looked at my correx yet but I recommend them, they're certainly the cheapest I've seen to do large sheets :)
