Not a great title but..

So currently the Guinea pigs live in a hutch in the unheated garage, they have a large run on the floor for during the day. The hutch is slightly insulated with layers of that silver foil stuff and cardboard and blankets for at night when it's cold. They are about a year old.

Next April we are getting an extension and the garage is going to be removed and then rebuilt. The Guinea pigs can't come inside the house as my eldest son has Aspergers and is quite freaked out by them.

However I am worried about them being outside a/because they up never have been b/ because it's not exactly warm up here even in the summer and it's often windy c/because of dust and noise. The extension will take 3-4 months so boarding them out for the duration isn't an answer.

Thoughts? And good ideas?

No sadly shed not really a possibility, biggest problem being that garden is on a slope so we would have to go to a lot of expense to make somewhere flat to put a shed on..

the weather starts to get warmer may to sept,i keep mine outside then, with a sturdy cover and fly screen to stop flys or other insects getting in.mine have gone in the shed for winter.if thats not possible can you bring them into a consevatory, porch, spare room.it is difficult decision.

We've just 'recovered' from a downstairs kitchen/garage extension. I refused to get the piggys until after it was done. Have to say it was a good job, the noise and dust was pretty bad even though we had good builders and tried to keep on top of everything. Hopefully extension is just the garage? If it's indoors as well, I'd try and get piggys out for the noisy work. Our really noisy work lasted about two weeks. Think our piggys would of have had a heart attack with some of the machinery they use. Not sure I'm helping u much.......

Is it a possibility to have them in a locked room for the time being if a shed is not an option? Or have you got local piggy savvy friends that could mind them for the time being? Perhaps your vet could put you in contact with somebody who may be able to help you locally?

It's the garage being demolished and then rebuilt with another storey on top, it's going to last about 3 months..

I guess I need to find out how much noise there will be, I guess they could possibly be inside during the day during that time, but I don't know if that will be any quieter.

I think in the garden we could have a hutch with a cover for wet/night and a screen to prevent draughts and dust coming in. We need a new hutch so now to start looking, we currently have one with a slope in it but I now understand that's not recommended.

The noises are quite ear splitting sometimes e.g. first 2 weeks and when they are cutting wood with the electric saws which they will probably do in the garden. I'm not an expert on guinea pigs but my feelings are that this would be quite stressful. But I've no idea how resilient piggys are. If the extension isn't inside the house I think a lockable room would be best. Or could you put the hutch in a friends garage?

If they are already in an unheated garage, then moving them outside shouldn't come as a huge shock to them.
Plus it will be April, so whilst not super warm, it also should be below freezing most nights.
If they really can't come inside what about making some sort of temporary 'lean to' type structure in the garden to offer a bit more shelter from the elements.
Do you have a fenced corner, or corner by the house where they could go?
If so then maybe it is possible to get some wood and a few sheets of corrugated roofing plastic, and make a basic frame around the hutch and then add the roofing.
Or look into one of those temporary green house tents to go over their hutch - you can keep the doors open, unless the weather is really bad.
But they should also be fine in a good quality outdoor hutch with a decent cover too.
Try looking in the thread about hutches in the housing section to get some ideas.
