Hi - we got two long haired guineapigs less than two weeks ago. We have just noticed a lump on one of their backs, or we can’t tell if it’s matted in the fur, it’s sticky, almost like wax, Can anybody help to identify it please? It’s not near to his bottom, so I don’t think it’s a grease gland.

If they’re boars, could it be boar glue? Is it hard to the touch? And it’s in the hair and not under the skin?

Hi!

It is either a burst sebaceous cyst or an abscess. Please have your piggies seen by a vet for a hands-on examination; we cannot diagnose sight unseen nor are we qualified to.
If they are from a pet shop, you can reclaim any vet cost relating to a problem they have come with as part of your customer rights. We recommend to have all new piggies vet checked; even more so if they are private intakes in not the best state.

Please give your long-hairs a short summer haircut. It can be life-saving during a heat spike or prolonged heatwave.

Yes it’s a male and it feels like it’s more in the hair. I have a picture but I don’t know how to attach it on here. Thanks

Thank you everyone! It was boar glue (after we googled it)! The guinea pig in question is all- white! This has saved us a potentially very embarrassing trip to the vets 😂. Here is a picture in case anybody else has this problem! Thanks again!
