Hi we've noticed that Ginger has a watery eye. He's eating fine and otherwise looks healthy. Am just wondering whether to wipe it gentle with boiled (and cooled down) water and see how it goes, or if he'll need to be checked over by a vet. Pic of eye attached.

Hi

A watery eye is usually the sign of an irritation or pain in the eye; especially if it also indrawn.
It can also be a symptom of a not yet ulcerated eye poke.

Please see whether something is stuck in the eye under a lid and have it vet checked promptly )i.e. within 24 hours if at all possible) if it doesn't stop anytime soon or returns.

I would make a vet consultation.
My mocha had a watery eye with gooey and then crusty discharge.

My boy had conjunctivitis. My vet gave me one eye drop which did not work and then subsequently a second eye drop that cured the problem. I have a picture on my thread of the medicines I was perscribed.

Best of luck to you and your piggy!

Update: Ginger's eye cleared up in the morning and we couldn't see anything wrong at all. I guess whatever was irritating it sorted itself out.
I am the first to advocate a prompt vet visit for any eye issues, but I have noticed in some of my older piggies (age 5 plus) they they do seem to suffer with the occasional watery eye.
I would never leave it more than 24 hours, but I have found that it does sometimes clear up on its own.
I have no idea if this is because cleaning is a little harder when they are older or just a peculiarity of my piggies (mostly Ruby).
But I am glad your boy's eye is looking better.

Had his eye still been watery or not looking right we would've taken him to the vets in the morning. Our guineas tend to nose dive into their hay (mostly so they can get to the tasty muesli and veggies mixed up underneath it), so we're always checking they haven't got anything in their eyes 🙄
