Hello everyone, my two guinea pigs have had a fight lately and I saw the youngest one with his eye like this. I'm not sure if its a piece of hay that hurt him or could be stuck there or wether its a cut from one of their fights. Do we need to take him to the vet? answers would be greatly appreciated.

I’m sorry your piggies fought. You will have to separate them in this case if it was bad enough to cause injury.

Eyes are classed an emergency so should always be seen by a vet. The good thing is that eyes are treated the same for all animals so you can take piggy to any vet. Hopefully it’s something simple.

:agr:

It looks a bit sore so I'd have a vet take a look. They'll also be able to see and remove any foreign bodies that may remain if that is what caused the issue initially. Hopefully everything will be ok and heal nicely. Let us know how he gets on.

If your guinea pigs have fought they shouldn't be put back together, especially if blood has been drawn. How big is the boys cage? Do you have enough room to have them in seperate caves side by side for interaction?

A watery eye is a sign of pain and irritation and can indicate an eye injury or infection. Please see a vet as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours of noticing a problem. In the UK potential eye injuries are being prioritised because they can deteriorate very quickly and can be more extensive than visible to the naked eye. A vet will check the with a special dye under UV light. The sooner you can start treatment, the quicker and more straight forward the recovery. ;)

Since eye injuries and the medication used are the same for all common pet species, you do not need to see an exotics vets. With eyes, it is speed over specialisation that is the important thing.

All the best! Hopefully it is just a minor scratch underneath that film of watery tear fluid.
