please help.. is congestion a sign of water on the lunges? della has stopped drinking (currently being treated for suspected UTI) so have been trying to syringe her water however shes having none of it. i have noticed the last few days her being congested throughout the day (normally its only when she scoffs, usually her grass in the evening) so i’m freaking out over the fact i may have got water in her lunges?! what are the signs / symptoms please? shes not lost her appetite and still running around like a loon, contacting vets today but still freaking out🥵

ps, sorry for not being very active, have tried to stay away from everything to keep a clear head, hope everyone and their piggies are well x

Hi

If you are over-watering her and she is not thirsty, then she will fight the syringe. A congested nose is the result of excess water going up the nose, which is usually what happens when you push too much water too quickly (the same as what happens when human kids drink too quickly).

The signs of water going down the wrong way are very similar to our human reactions: a coughing fit to get it out again. Food going down the wrong way is fatal for syringe-fed newborn babies because they do not yet have a working immune system but adults can usually deal with the issue without getting pneumonia. So please do not worry. It doesn't sound like that is what you are dealing with.

You can always do your own quick check by holding your ear against the nose and then the chest to see where a funny noise is coming from. The nose is not to worry about. ;)

Please take a deep breath and stop trying to over-water your piggy beyond what they will accept. You simply cannot make piggies drink more than they want to and feel is good for them because it makes them feel unwell if they are overhydrated.
