Hi so I've seen that people are supposed to thoroughly wash their hands after stroking a guinea pig however I'm wondering if this is actually necessary as my guinea pig lives indoors and I've been told that guinea pigs are quite clean creatures so I was wondering if anyone actually thoroughly washes their hands or if it's just being super duper hygienic? Thanks

I do to be fair as they are in the hay, on the fleece, they pee and poo and I would

I’m a complete slattern 😳 I’m afraid I wash my hands scores of times a day at work, I just about manage to do it post loo and pre cooking at home 😂😂 Still here to tell the tale…

Hi
I always wash my hands after handling piggies or cleaning cages, and also in between medicating different piggies after I accidentally transmitted the odd issue between them when I thought it wasn't a contagious issue. Some things can be also transmitted between species.

I always wash my hands before cooking and eating in order to be sure. Seeing the amount of poos piggies produce and how they always have pee particles in their coat, handwashing is not a luxury but a necessity hypiene measure. Eventually it becomes automatic.

Here is our guide that deals with hygiene and all things that can be transmitted to and from pets to humans and between different pet species: Contagion - Inter-species transmission and pet care during owner illness/pregnancy (incl. Covid)
