I don’t think there any solution to my problem but I thought I’d ask away anyway, just in case someone had an idea.

Bit of background information first. I’m 20, the pigs are mine, I pay everything for them, they’re not family pets. I still live at home and whilst the family aren’t against my pigs, they don’t have anything to do with them. My pigs have always been on bedding.

Probably about a year ago I decided to try fleece and I loved it! The pigs loved it! It was sooo easy to clean. I brought a pet laundry bag to keep the washing machine clean and also stuck it on a empty rinse cycle after I’d used it just in case.

Anyway, my family started to moan. Our machine has set temperatures for set cycles. Meaning if you want a cool wash it’s 30mins but if you want a 60degree wash you’re looking at 2.5hr. My family moaned it took up too much time and electricity, despite the fact I contribute to the house bill. They also moaned that it wasn’t hygienic and I was just being soft etc. So to keep the peace I stopped using fleece. But I miss it soooo much!

Has anybody out there found a way of cleaning fleece without using a washing machine? I’ve looked at getting one of the little stand alone machines but I don’t think it’d be big enough or strong enough to take a fleece liner.

I’ve come to the conclusion that my girls just aren’t getting fleece until I move out, but I thought I’d just ask anyway.

No ideas about alternative methods of washing but you could point out that if you are washing fleece on a sixty degree wash it is actually helping the machine be free of mould - too many 30 degree washes are not hygienic. Also you could take electricity readings before and after a load to see how much it actually costs and pay accordingly.

As for the hygiene thing- I use a 'horsewear' bag such as this.

You put the fleece inside and it stops hair/hay/poops getting into the machine. You just shake the bag out after washing.

Yeah that’s what I’ve got anyway. To be fair there wasn’t any hair in the machine after parents just didn’t think it was hygiene. :(

How annoying. How about hand washi g and using the machine for spinning once the fleece liners are clean?

maybe if you live near a launderette this may help.the laundry detergent that piggyowner suggests ,means you can wash at 30 degrees,it kills bacteria, fungal, and virus infections, that is the only liquid you will need ! you are in a difficult situation !

Thought about going to a local laundry place. It's about a dollar or less per load and if you're like me trying to save money you stuff as much stuff as you can in one go.:))

this is the only petware laundry detergent I've seen recommended on this forum

500ml Paragon Flea & Mite Laundry Detergent - Paragon Pet - halo Pet

oh not heard of that before, i've always used good old 'Napisan' for my dog blankets, etc. (&my whites wash) its a germicidal, washing powder & disinfectant originally for Terry towelling nappies. cleans & kills germs at 30'c

Napisan Non Biological Stain Remover 800g

cheapest i've found is at Wilko £2.50 a box - think its usually in the baby aisle, not the washing powder aisle.
i use as well as my usual Daz automatic in the powder drawer- approx half & half of each in the wash.
